Middle Falls, #Letchworth State Park, #New_York #GeneseeRiver #photography #SupportPublicLands

The Letchworth Park's gardeners and arborists framed the stone stairway to the path by Middle Falls. It makes it feel like a portal to another world, maybe Middle Earth.

Next year's butterfly banquet and caterpillar cafeteria waiting to open up new diners. #milkweed #seedpods #photography #SupportPublicLands

Three mature milkweed seed pods are sun drying their husks, waiting for fall and winter winds and storms to open them, and spread their fluffy seeds all around Saranac Lake. The photo was taken while we were walking on the rails-to-trails park. There were many native plants growing beside it These were growing on the causeway across the lake.

If you hike on a trail in #Indiana you might see a log or a stump with a "W" carved into it. The story of the "W" is in the ALT text. #hiking #trail #autumn #photography #SupportPublicLands

This photo of a hiking trail in early autum has a log with a "W" carved into it with a chainsaw. It took The Hoosier Hikers Council 3 years to build this trail. Many deadfalls had to be cleared from the route and almost all of them were cleared by Phil W. Phil volunteered with the HHC for over 20 years and would usually leave his mark on one tree on a trail. There are trails all over the state with Phil's "W". Phil died a couple of weeks ago. So if you see a "W" on a tree that has been cleared off of a trail in Indiana, think kindly of Phil and enjoy his work.

Shale #cliffs along the #GeneseeRiver, #Letchworth State Park, #NewYork #photography #SupportPublicLands #blackandwhite #monochrome #geology

Highly eroded cliffs line this section of the Genesee River. The cliffs are mostly layers of shale. The shapes remind me of those we have seen in the Chinle and Moenkopi formations on the Colorado Plateau. A good video about the geology of Letchworth is at the URL.

You take the high #bridge, and I'll take the low bridge. #HockingHills #StatePark #Ohio #photography #SupportPublicLands

We took both bridges across Old Man's Creek. First we crossed the A-frame upper bridge; then later on the hike we crossed the sculptural bridge. Each step on the lower concrete bridge is separate from the next and supported by its own pillar. I especially like the way that the design mirrors the curve of the overhanging sandstone. The upper bridge is made of wood and steel trusses. More information about the lower bridge is at the URL.

The Civilian Conservation Corps, #CCC, built this #bridge across the gorge below the Lower Falls of the #GeneseeRiver in #Letchworth State Park, #NewYork during the #GreatDepression. #photography #SupportPublicLands #waterfall

A stone bride spans a river. Two people are on the bridge looking at the falls. The bridge is about 100 feet (30 m) long. It is the only way to cross the river inside the park. This is another example of the CCC's work on public lands. The arch was built by first erecting wooden trusses to support the stonework. The museum at the park has a good photo display of the bridge's construction.

A stone wall along the #trail and the road at #Letchworth State Park, #NewYork. #B&W #monochrome #SupportPublicLands

A curving stone wall borders the hiking trail and the road above the gorge at Letchworth. Much of the stonework at the park like so many other parks was done in the 1930 by the Civilian Conservation Corps. The museum at the park has an excellent room on the CCC's legacy at the park. Many of our state and national parks benefitted from this progressive program to help families during the Great Depression. See if there were CCC programs near you.
