Thanks @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk for this week's #PoemsAbout #FaultLines, here's something short and sweet... will check in on others later! #poetry

Before the divorce we ate canapés

this must be your muse
the artist asked me
sparkling wine in hand
as we small talked
the gallery opening

no, I said
this is my wife
have you met?
@bernp.bsky.socialSep 11, 2026, 9:00 AM

thanks to @thebrokenspine.co.uk and @alanparrywriter.co.uk for #PoemsAbout #FaultLines look forward to seeing other's work

Insomnia
An appalling crack of light
Pours into my room,
Picking up in its cast
Specks, spiralling
Across this place
Where I can no
Longer find peace.
A little universe from hell.
It seems to draw me
Away from familiar
Weather, the arcadia of my life,
She, who rises and falls
Beside me in sleep.
I beached, marooned
By the baying rabble in
The courtroom of my head,
Cursing the crushed velvet, moth
Book marking a fold in the curtain,
For its good fortune, in being dead.

And this morning I have given myself the earworm of 'Your Fault' from Into the Woods. Which is great, but even so.
#PoemsAbout #FaultLines

my fault

clearly things had gone pear-shaped
it was another failure
another inquest would begin
another post-mortem
concluding that there had been
no indication

but i would pass my driving test eventually

Shifting plates, shifting times
Changes following fault lines
And reinvention's catalysed
As from beneath, volcanoes rise.
Pockmarked face, ruptured skin,
The oozes seeping from within
Leave a landscape without hope
Subject to the pains of growth,
Magma's puss though, fades away,
Leaves fertile ground within its stay
Where forests of a thousand hairs
Are cultivated, with great care
To cover up the cracks and scars
That settled in across the years.
But time; as she is want, still moves
Those plates, and with them cracks and grooves
Paint chasms in a different place
Where forests can't erase their trace
New acts each day on seismic stage,
And tremors just increase with age.

Haven't dabbled in #PoemsAbout with @thebrokenspine.co.uk for ages. Here's a little 'un for today's #FaultLines with thanks to @alanparrywriter.co.uk

Reaching for the faultmeter
was the easy part. More tricky
was locating the positive
and negative terminals
of our disagreement

Another week is over and another #PoemsAbout day is upon us.

I've had a doozy of a week, but I made it. Here's to everyone else that did 👏

Fault Line

I didn’t grow up with monsters.
I grew up with people
who were carrying so much
they dropped pieces of themselves.

I feel the weight
of the swallowed anger.
The pressure
of choices not made.
A stone,
an heirloom,
sitting on my chest.

I want to blame them.
I do.
I want to point
and say you did this to me.
But I won't.

Instead I sit with the truth:
they shared what they had.
Now do the cracks end here
or keep traveling?

For #PoemsAbout - thanks to
@alanparrywriter.co.uk and @thebrokenspine.co.uk
Might use some of this one in my novel-in-progress - title 'Light Switch' - which is very much about #Faultlines

NEXT LIFE
by Clare O'Brien

The asphalt scabs are crumbling,
their planes acutely angled,
potholes erupting stones.

Tarmac prairies once allowed
the smooth running of machines,
whose long reign is at an end.

Wild emeralds emerge from cracks,
throbbing with moisture. Wet life
reasserts, ebbing the tide of tar.

Rain falls like a blessing
on the tiny forests, oozing moss,
copses and bogs reaffirmed.

We beat our wings and howl,
take to the sun bright air,
swim the deepening green.

Zagreb Elegy

We bond over
Letters:
Shared passion for
Language, literature - the
Life of the Mind;
Shared cache of quotes from
Python, Blackadder, ‘Allo ‘Allo.

The Girl from Zagreb -
Polyglot, worldly beyond her
Eighteen years, working-class -
Eclipsing with ease the churchy,
Would-be Oxbridge crop of a
Suffolk sixth form.

Her neat, feminine hand,
My barely legible scrawl:
Aghast at Tiananmen Square,
Elated at the Fall of the
Berlin Wall.

Maiden Voyage, December 1989:
Sleeper via Milan to stay with her
In Hrvatska*, Yugoslavia.
Melee of Laibach, Gastarbeiter**,
Hyperinflation,
Hand-milled coffee and MTV.

Goli Otok, Adriatic Alcatraz,
Abandoned that very year.
Bratstvo, jedinstvo i suživot~ -
Dried husks crumbling into tinder.

My friend’s university ID:
Latin and Croatian arrayed in
Solemn columns -
Zagreb folding back into the
Bulwark of Christendom.

One morning, dark-clad,
Sombre, she absents herself.

High-school comrade,
Bosnian Muslim girl, has
Taken her own life. Later,
My friend, dejected, recalls the
Mother’s blank-eyed, flint-faced
Parting words:
Možda će joj Bog oprostiti -
Maybe
God will forgive her.

For #PoemsAbout #Faultlines and @alanparrywriter.co.uk @thebrokenspine.co.uk

Hear "Welcome

to my world," every time I talk of pains in small of my back

and up my legs. Twenty years standing at work gives her compatible pains

that work into snap remarks about lack of quality in cleaning

bathroom, or any other room in the home, putting pressure on

handles as if she is expected to repair every blemish, worn items,

aging husbands, and her own decay to preserve illusion that all is right.

On the beach

They have drawn    a line in the sand;
a deep incision wide as the stick one
of them used to make it. It is a line of
principles of stances taken.
You may approach to consider
    its certainties: thus far
no further they will not countenance
any stepping beyond it is after all
    a line in the sand.
Ask a question while they stand there
    resplendent in an angry black
    stand there backs to the
ocean indifferent to the fact of
an incoming tide

Yes, there are many epic and heroic stories about 9/11, but for the most part history is made up of pointillistic, random moments. I will put a reading in the comments.

SEA MONKEYS

I made a friend of convenience
in the serpentine queue
at the New York Waterway terminal
waiting for ferries back to Jersey.
Just two tandem hatchlings
in a tank full of sea monkeys
sharing innocent histories
to pass time, and trying to pan reason
from a conduit of chaos. Doing mental math
we figured two heads were better than one
so we made a pact to stick together
until we were assured of our shared returns.
Five or six hours later
a ferry a bus a city hike a couple of rail lines
I finally reached my dad on a borrowed phone
and he met the train at Matawan station.
I offered my companion a ride
but her hesitation immediately told me
she would remain on the southbound train
and our symbiotic tether had been severed.
We wished each other a very well
psychically remapping our actual lives
but I feel a bit hollow recollecting
neither of us knows the other’s name.

#PoemsAbout #FaultLines starts Friday.
