The Romanian strigoi could be restless dead or supernatural beings who troubled the living. Some traditions held that suspected strigoi returned to their own families. Forget elegant strangers in capes. The vampire might be a relative who refused to stay buried. #FairyTaleTuesday

The changeling appears in European folklore as a being left in place of a human child supposedly taken by fairies. These stories could reflect historical attempts to explain illness or developmental differences and sometimes led to cruelty. Not all fairy beliefs were harmless. #FairyTaleTuesday

In Welsh folklore, King Arthur needed to acquire the two pups of the She-Wolf of Rhymi to hunt the monstrous boar Trwyth. When Arthur's men cornered this wolf, a divine miracle removed the curse she was under, and so she regained her true form: a human princess.

The Roman goddess Cardea guarded door hinges and thresholds. In Ovid’s Fasti, she touches doorposts with strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo) leaves to protect an infant from the striges, vampire-like night birds sometimes said to be witches transformed by magic. #FairytaleTuesday

Collage of photographs of the strawberry tree (Arbutus unedo), showing clusters of small, creamy-white, bell-shaped flowers among glossy green leaves, alongside close-up views of the distinctive round, textured fruits as they ripen from pale yellow through orange to bright red.

There is an old rule in Irish country places that no one should pick a blackberry once the month of October is over. By the first of November, the people said, the puca had been over the hedges, and the fruit that remained was spoiled.

The familiar skull and crossbones on early American gravestones wasn't necessarily meant to frighten anyone. Puritan-era "death's head" carvings bluntly reminded viewers that death comes for everyone. Later, winged cherubs gradually replaced some of those grinning skulls. #FairyTaleTuesday

Gef was allegedly a talking mongoose who inhabited the farmhouse of the Irving family on the Isle of Man in the 1930s. At different times, Gef claimed to be an "extra-extra-clever mongoose" or an "earthbound spirit." The story was extensively covered by the 1930s British tabloids.

A broken column on a gravestone traditionally symbolized a life cut short. An inverted torch could represent death while its still-burning flame suggested life continuing beyond it. Victorian cemeteries weren't simply burial grounds. They were libraries written in stone. #FairyTaleTuesday
