An investigation often produces far more material than a courtroom gets to see.

But sometimes you find something that undermines the prosecution’s case — and assists the defence.
Dig around long enough, and you can strike gold.

If someone official tells you to do something, you cooperate.
Refusing feels wrong.
Am I being rude?
Do I look suspicious?
Do I look guilty?
But what if someone you can’t properly identify is telling you to open your car door?

We believe more information means better decisions.
But in a jury room, that can cause a serious problem.
Everywhere else, the search bar promises a better decision.
On a jury, sometimes the discipline is knowing when not to use it.

Once you’re already under suspicion, almost any reaction can be read the wrong way.
So what do you think an innocent reaction actually looks like?

After an arrest, people make throwaway comments almost anywhere. In the police car, at the custody desk, while samples are being dealt with.
Sometimes it’s bravado. Or nerves. Sometimes they’re simply trying to explain themselves.

How do you make a month go by?
Gym on Tuesday? A call on Thursday? A visit next week?
When most days have the same structure, one day feels incredibly slow.
Then you look back, and six months are hard to separate.

In a disputed allegation, certainty can sound persuasive.

The first version may tell you something the later one does not.
Which would you trust more: certainty now, or uncertainty at the start?

Only one of these people intended to steal.

The difference is something the camera may never show you.

Theft requires more than proving unpaid goods left the shop.

If this was the only footage you had, what would you believe?

There is evidence that can never be collected again.
A witness’s first description.
You can interview a witness again.
You can never interview that earlier version of them again.
Which version would you trust most?

“Make sure you delete everything.”

If you already believe a crime is involved, that message can sound terrible.
But anything can sound suspicious once you’ve been told a crime is involved.

No previous convictions.Twenty years of marriage. A steady job. Never known to be violent.
None of that proves somebody didn’t commit a crime.
But being accused of doesn’t make the rest disappear either.

The evidence that changes a criminal case can look completely useless when you first find it. Until you put it together.

The most important evidence isn’t always a single piece of evidence, but the thread between them.

I’ve had clients walk free without ever knowing if they actually did it.

Sometimes a case just collapses, and the client goes home.

Could you still fight for someone without ever knowing the answer?

The trial is due to start in 15 minutes.
The lawyers are ready.

The judge is ready.

The jury is ready.
But the client isn’t here.

And if the system doesn’t produce him,

He’s the one who pays the price.

How long could you sit in silence while someone accused you of something serious?

Saying “No Comment” can be the right decision.

That doesn’t make it easy.

You need to ruin your own case.
... before the courtroom does it for you.

Try to prove yourself wrong.
Change course if you need to.
Because if the case still holds up after that,
there’s very little left that can surprise you.

Then the jury returned.
Not guilty.

If your life was put on hold, what’s the first thing you’d do when it was finally yours again?

Police interviews usually involve two positions: witness or suspect. The difficulty is that it's not always obvious which one you are.
Because if you are no longer being treated as a witness, you should not keep answering like one.

His DNA is on the weapon.
He never saw the knife.

He never touched the knife.

And yet there it is.
Between the suspect and the weapon, something is missing.
But what does that fact actually prove?
Would you have been convinced?
