In a criminal case, challenging the prosecution’s evidence can trigger further enquiries and uncover material that helps the defence, strengthens the prosecution, or surprises both sides. Would you take that gamble?

Do you have to wait until someone hits you before acting in self defence? Judging that decision with hindsight isn't the same as judging what someone believed in the moment.

CCTV gets overwritten, cameras miss moments and cash leaves less of a trail. An account can look very different depending on what evidence survives.

What if you can’t understand how your own words are being interpreted? An interpreter can become the voice police and solicitors hear. But meaning matters in an investigation.

Being innocent doesn’t mean you have nothing to hide. In an investigation, people protect information that isn't criminal. But avoiding questions make behaviour look suspicious.

CCTV, digital evidence & messages can look meaningless until the defendant identifies something missing. For someone on remand, accessing evidence isn't as simple as lokking for it again.

We’re delighted that Raj Chada will speak at Trinity College Dublin’s University Philosophical Society on 1 October, debating: “This House Would Take the Law into Their Own Hands.” Raj will explore civil disobedience and when breaking the law may be justified.

When the person accusing you wants to talk, ignoring them can be hard.
But once that becomes evidence, what you meant and how your words are interpreted can become two very different things.

Different accounts can look suspicious because we expect people who saw the same event to remember the same details.
In reality, witnesses giving slightly different versions may be more plausible.

The footage of Danny Tommo and the inflatable boat might look difficult to argue with, but when someone has pleaded not guilty to criminal damage, that could open up a very different route for the defence.

CCTV evidence can show exactly what someone did and still leave an important questions unanswered. Behaviour only tells part of the story, and criminal evidence still has to prove what that behaviour actually meant

They’ve had weeks to build the case.

Once the police interview starts and a lot of the questions sound too simple.
Would knowing what they had reassure you or make you second-guess yourself more?

You look guilty.

And the interview itself may be part of why.

Once you’ve decided someone is guilty, can you ever question them neutrally?

A teenager commits an offence.

Then people ask what the parents did to stop it.
So which mistake should the law risk making?

Being too soft on the parent who did nothing?

Or punishing the parent who could not do any more?

This car is about to cause a collision.
That changes the way you see everything that came before it.The jury gets to look backwards from the consequence.
The defendant had to act without knowing it.
Can we ever judge fairly with hindsight?

At the most important moment of my client’s trial, I couldn’t help him.
I couldn’t say another word in his defence.
Then we heard the words we’d been fighting for.
Not guilty.

He’d fought a murder case from prison — and won.

The evidence can show someone leaving, deleting messages, shaking, staying calm.
But it can’t show you the thoughts inside their head.
And in a criminal case, that thought might be exactly what has to be proved.
