Very interesting read and seems there's still a lot to unravel.

Some parallels with the grieving behavioural processes of some cetaceans, perhaps?

Also, a thoughtful paragraph from #JohnHawks on the loss of loved ones.

Just taped for the BBC on this fascinating set of observations in humpback whales. I argued that yes we should strongly consider maternal love + grief here, based on what the researchers report--and on what we know abt animals' emotions. #whales #cetaceans #grief #animalgrief #deathstudies #nature

Common dolphins are seen often on these excursions, including close to the ship. These photos are great in showing individuals just beneath the water surface. Photos by Alex Srdic. #dolphins #cetaceans #marinemammals

Risso's dolphin appears to be changing its range in response to climate change and prey availability. No longer seems to be an oceanic species around the UK, but is now more frequently seen in coastal waters. Here's a 2025 article where I discuss this issue... tetzoo.com/blog/2025/7/... #cetaceans

Large flock (17+) of Long-finned Pilot Whales on the River Thames, viewed from Gravesend, this evening. First I've seen in UK waters this century. Last image shows one animal frequently on its side...fingers crossed for it. BDMLR are aware. #kentnature @kentfieldclub.bsky.social #cetaceans
