Here are some more September Salish Sea stats: — The T19s were our most commonly seen matriline for September (20 of the month’s 30 days) — The largest group of Bigg’s was 32 whales (9/15 in the Strait of Juan de Fuca) — While present, SRKW & NRKW numbers were lower than September 2025.

Today is International #SaveTheVaquita Day! 🎉

With fewer than 20 left, the Vaquita is the world's most endangered marine mammal. I painted this piece in the hope of raising awareness for vaquita.day.

#Cetacean #Whales #Porpoise #Endangeredspecies #Conservation #Animalart #Sciart #NatureArt

A painting of 3 Vaquitas swimming underwater among some corals and underwater plant life.

This painting was made for Save the Vaquita Week 2026 in hopes of raising funds and awareness to help the vaquita come back from possible extinction.

Save the Vaquita Postcard Print is a limited run of 100 signed 5x7 inch postcard prints, on premium cardstock, and will be signed and numbered on the back.

This hand painted original postcard print is a little token and a reminder that you made a difference in helping the Vaquita. All funds will be donated directly to porpoise.org for Save the Vaquita Week!

Scientists believe a killer whale found dead in the Western Isles is one of the oldest male orcas ever recorded following analysis of its teeth.

The animal, discovered on a shoreline on South Uist in 2015, is thought to have been 65 years old or older. www.bbc.com/news/article...

TGIF! It's been a long week, and we could all use something beautiful on our feeds. This excellent shot of BCX0158 "Kappa" breaching near Lighthouse Park in West Vancouver, BC was taken by Julia Adelsheim of Wild Whales Vancouver. 🐋

It's #FunFactFriday! Did you know Belugas have been called "canaries of the sea" due to the hundreds of various vocalizations they've been recorded producing? One of three whale species who can live their whole life in the Arctic they are very well adapted for chilly environments.

This months Journal Club featured a different type of paper for us. "Late Paleolithic whale bone tools reveal human and whale ecology in the Bay of Biscay" was a super cool look at tools used from whale bones and highlighted how much we still have to learn about our history, let alone cetaceans!

September was a busy month in the Salish Sea, with high sightings of Southern Resident, Northern Resident, and Bigg's killer whales!

A map of the Salish Sea with dots showing the first location of every orca sightings for the month of September 2026. Red dots are for Bigg's killer whales, blue dots for Southern Residents, and yellow dots for Northern Residents. For the purposes of this map, a sighting is defined as a unique group of orcas seen on a unique day.

"Puget Sound has emerged as a haven during hard times for gray whales. The eastern North Pacific (ENP) population of the species is broadly considered a conservation success story, increasing from perhaps a few hundred individuals in the wake of industrial whaling to about 20,000 in 1994..."
