#AncestryHour "Around 2,500 residents lost their homes as part of the flooding" according to Wikipedia's article.

Kind of big for a #OnePlaceStudy.

@packrat74.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 6:49 PM

#AncestryHour All the towns that were drowned when the Quabbin Reservoir was created would make a dandy #OnePlaceStudy if it weren't so big. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quabbin...

#AncestryHour Elsewhere in Massachusetts I have an obit that says a family came from Enfield, which also made me yell *which one* - the drowned Enfield Massachusetts or the undrowned Enfield Connecticut?

@packrat74.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 6:45 PM

#AncestryHour So I guess in a few minutes I'll be off to survey Sheffield Massachusetts and try to find out how many Hindley families lived *there*, and rule them out. Or find more clues, who knows?

@packrat74.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 6:43 PM

#AncestryHour Especially when the Hannah Drake I think it might be is enumerated in Sheffield in 1841 has a guy named George Hindley living in her household? But no, let's put it on FSFT that her husband was born in Sheffield, Massachusetts.

@packrat74.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 6:43 PM

#AncestryHour The tree has Samuel Hindley born in Sheffield (inferred: Massachusetts) and his son George born in Sheffield (inferred: Massachusetts) who married Hannah Drake born in Sheffield (Yorkshire) and I'm like, really? What would the odds be on that?

@packrat74.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 6:37 PM

#AncestryHour I just took a trip into my notifications of people I follow on FamilySearch FamilyTree and hoo boy.

There's a person I think came from Sheffield (England) and someone has entered them on the tree as from Sheffield (Massachusetts) & you know what? I probably should go rule that out.

Hi #ancestryhour folks, heads been deep in WWII this week, finishing up a family history narrative for Polish refugees who came out to #nz in the '40s. So much of the story was too difficult for the previous generation to talk about. Lost to time! We pulled together as much as we could. #genealogy

#AncestryHour My take on Generative AI is "Sam Altman and all the other AI company CEOs should be yeeted into the sun" and this map does nothing to change my attitude.

@philgrass.bsky.socialSep 29, 2026, 6:15 PM

Hi #AncestryHour. I found this AI "map" on a genealogy website (no names !). What are your thoughts? I'm not a fan - getting the geography wrong distorts the long relationship between the people of Scotland and Ireland (and confuses the heck out of people who don't realise the error).

A presumed AI-generated "Map of Ireland And Scotland" with Ireland incorrectly placed in relation to Scotland (or vice versa)

#AncestryHour For those who want to see my mat GF’s original birth cert copy (the transcribed one‘s in the embedded post), I got this yesterday. Also, source-wise, I got this from the county but the copy says it’s from the state, so do I source the county, the state, or both the county & the state?

#AncestryHour This video by Crista Cowan has some tips on how to evaluate the index of an Ancestry database before you begin searching in it. She's addressing the number of entries which are missing names but the technique might also reveal problems with place.

#AncestryHour highlight of my week was seeing a photo of my 4x great-grandma pop up on a Māori Ancestry FB group. Kia ora cuzzy! She's my ancestor too, & that baby she's holding was my great-grandmother! Poster descended from one of the women I'd found on the #nz suffrage petition of 1893 this week

#AncestryHour That's wonderful! House history is so much fun.
