If I can peel the orange
in a single spiral, stem to blossom,
then the year will follow suit —
will flow unhindered, sweet
and juicy, full of zest.

But if the peel comes off in patches,
leaving pith for me to pick at,
then the year will match the fruit —
will stop and start, meet
boring setbacks best left unexpressed.

Here in the city of the dead
there are no eyes to follow me,
uncertain of my honesty
or fearing my intent.

Beneath these gravestones, wrapped in lead,
our petty inhumanities
are wiped clean by eternity;
death knows no discontent.

Even the birds are calmer here;
there are no feet or speeding wheels
to dodge while looking for a meal
of stale discarded crumbs.

The ancient yew trees soothe my fears
a while, allow me to conceal
myself so I can start to heal,
prepare for what’s to come.

We search for a time we’ve already lived,
in hopes of feeling young again.
Trying to fly in the sky once more—

instead of taking heavy steps forward.

Some days feel heavier here and there,
others weigh down on our hearts,
ever so gently.

But it’s not just all heavy weight.

So when you wipe the foggy mirror,
with your trembling hand.
will you see a smiling face…

or a drained-out visage?

this time I will take the wind with me
in a brown paper bag
and sit with it waiting
on a five-barred gate

when the hounds are heard
and the shrill unlovely note
of a horn
when the horses follow
bearing little sparks of malice
bundled up in unappealing
red-faced flesh

then I shall open my paper bag
and watch as all are swept away
arms and legs whirling
up over woods and hills
out across the cliffs and waves
dropped into the deeps

Violet clouds mist a gentle greet -
honey to musk,
jacarandas
crushed to rot on cobbled streets.

This week's waterford is a winner of the 2026 annual waterford competition, as chosen by Molly Twomey. It appears in "Duanaire - collected waterfords", the world's first poetry collection of waterfords which is edited by Kevin MacAlan, and features over 300 poems written by more than 90 poets from all over the globe.
