Before Fly Fishing

The book arrived today
My father had worked his way
Through many book shops
In the yellow pages

He unpicked the twine knot
With a letter knife
Folded back the brown wrapping
And revealed the hard cover

“Zaffrey” by JR Hartley
His book
Self published
Twenty some years ago

My grandfather whispered:
“The last copy”

And threw it on the fire

“It’s shit” he said

Young Hearts

Zaffa was my boyfriend at school
Six foot two and very, very cool
My parents didn't quite agree
Thought he was no good for me
So I was banned from all trysts
But his kisses were missed
So we used to sneak around
And when out we were found
Though I denied any lying
My parents weren't buying
And asked me quite knowingly
"Then why do you smell all Zaffery?"

I heard him scream through the night
all that timber blown out of sight
He has a pet kangaroo
that makes Kilimanjaro
mountain shoes
