It helps to know Bu Shi is a muse/alter ego I created in the early 2010s to post haiku/senryu, it also helps to know they don’t use the lettters L and T, but the poem uses all of the other letters. Our pseudo relationship is sometimes contentious.

DUBIOUS BU

bu emerges from a crack underground
open hand punch
hammering an arc of misshapen force

nor misspoken nor misheard

was a bad poem worsened
by jagged end rhymes
before even being conceived

weaned on my screams and misgivings

bad karma broken casino spinner
dopamine miser sucking my money sac
receiving receiving receiving never giving back

aces queens and princes join voracious jokers

oversized zippers sever
spewing sacred sera in free mason jars
examined by hydrographic surveyors

bu says form precedes usage

do you agree

I love you to Jupiter and back, my dear
being your mama's the mission I'm given
I won't leave, whatever the situation
whenever you need me I'll be here
I love you to Jupiter and back, my dear

we'll be together each reincarnation
I promise no unending separation
we'll find each other forever, don't fear
I love you to Jupiter and back, my dear

A Dead Letter

Caught in mid fall by a thread
from a spider a leaf or samsara
twirls. It can neither return

or find soil or sustenance,
a life suspended between
it cannot return to its branch.

It awaits the breakage of the thread
to continue its journey to concrete
or soil, or blown onto plastic.

My #PoemsAbout #deadletter is one I wrote for Safety in Numbers - a @gillcresearch.bsky.social poetry collection where each piece was written in response to the previous one. I was sorting through my Dad’s stuff when I received mine. Thanks @thebrokenspine.co.uk @alanparrywriter.co.uk #poetry

I'm a little out of practice...

The usual guff about life after death - I reckon that I must have enough for a small pamphlet by now.

Weather Inversion

Grief tags me when I learn that
You have just months left to live.

Mythos and lore speak of a
Sacred threshold that is
Crossed at such moments:

Brittle ground I tread -
Fragile air I breathe.

Late winter, two months before
You pass:

Thick fog squats down to dampen
Town and valley in a rare
Weather inversion that leaves
Peak and big sky unsullied.

Murk in April -
Two days after you pass -
Dulls my brain,
Muddles my sight.

Large, booming bird -
Rare in these parts -
Takes flight from an islet in the
Old abbey fishpond.

Heart gleams,
Vision brightens -

Now
I understand.

A Black Sapphire

I read that letter: ten years ago she wrote.
When the drizzle of her hair was a black sapphire.
Her skin a sandy storm, the sky to go before her eyes.
And nothing holding us back from the sea and its tides.

When the drizzle of her hair was a black sapphire.
Sometimes dawn tells, sometimes its afterglow hides.
And nothing holding us back from the sea and its tides.
I want to meet again before the darkest woods.

Sometimes dawn tells, sometimes its afterglow hides.
Where storms bear names of thunder, I’ll abide.
I want to meet again before the darkest woods.
A sax that plays the night into a thousand years.

Where storms bear names of thunder, I’ll abide.
She be my fire road, misty grass and bride.
A sax that plays the night into a thousand years.
I’ll stay beside her, even when her eyes turn into fear.

She be my fire road, misty grass and bride.
I read that letter ten years ago she wrote.
I’ll stay beside her, even when her eyes turn into fear.
When the drizzle of her hair was a black sapphire.

His fault lines, ran deeper than,
blood in his veins, marrow in his bone
convinced of his own fiction
writhe in your prison
adorn your own torture.

gathering in herds
all my stray words
tied up in green silk
poetry I once built
all my stray words
formed bridges
across my soul
shovelling gold
into my wounds
burying pain whole
