Give students real opportunities to count, use what they counted, and notice when something doesn’t add up. Those experiences help students understand that counting represents an amount—and that amount matters.

I saved the data.
In Nov, we'll use it to look at expected value.
In Feb, we'll use it to look at sampling distributions, & run some binomial- and chi^2 tests to see if we guessed better than randomly.
I can't wait.

And the first day of my 21st year teaching came to an end! I was too busy to take a selfie today, but here is a screenshot of my "What is a sandwich?" opening day activity. Special shout-out to @sneffleupagus.bsky.social, who introduced me to this activity at @nctm.org.😊 #MTBoS #ITeachMath #MfAProud

Rather than stressing why one doesn't belong, emphasize what the other three have in common. Discussion is key! Do it for each quadrant!

Some groups recognized the pattern for increasing population size: 1,3,6,10,... and continued to class size.
Some realized (informally) the 1st person shook n-1 hands, the 2nd n-2, etc. down to 1.
Others recognized each person shook n-1 hands, and that we'd double-counted each handshake.
Congratulations to Joel Akers of East Union High School, an ICTM Marilyn Zweng First-Year Teacher Grant recipient! Joel will use the funds for classroom supplies as he begins teaching high school math. iowamath.org/Zweng-Grant

Who's going to NCTM in Denver this year? I'm thinking of buying a one-day pass since I live right here! Sadly I was not paying attention closely enough to get district funding, but feeling like it would be worth it to pay my own way for a day! #mtbos
It's time for #MathStratChat!
Rules: post your favorite or a clever solution! It's also fun to comment on other's strategies.
Tell us about your reasoning.
Like/share so others can see!

There's no reason to try and make students figure out the social-knowledge aspects of math. Likewise, there's no reason to teach the logical parts of math as if they were social.

The Pharaoh’s Treasure, Part 2 --- The adventure continues with geometry puzzles to explore.
And I confess that I lied in the original story...
Finally got a few sets of @hpicciotto.bsky.social ‘s Lab Gear and introduced it in #MathsToday. You can do a lot more than with standard algebra tiles. Looking forward to trying the various explorations and activities to see what emerges. Does anyone else here use these? #iteachmath #mtbos

If one doesn't belong, how are the other three related? Do it for each quadrant! How could each quadrant not belong?

Dr. Francis Su's online course on the math of large language models, available to @mathforamerica.bsky.social NY teachers, filled up within 30 seconds of online registration. Fortunately, I was one of the 24 lucky ones who got in! ☺️ #MTBoS #ITeachMath
