Some of the chinese meanings feel way more dramatic than the english phrase that started it 😭 like how did we go from a normal everyday sentence to an entire poetic scene. #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

Honestly taken aback seeing how much is needed just to say that simple sentence, compared to all of the pervious shorter sentences. I also see that in the actual translation they just use the number "667," is their not characters for numbers or... #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

I feel like seeing the words actually changes what I hear. Once I read the english first my brain basically refuses to hear anything else after that which is kinda crazy. #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

A question Yingelishi leaves behind is: How can I break down the border between media? How can I construct a new but relevant idea from two different things? #hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes

I kept catching myself trying way too hard to find the english sentence in every sound lol. At some point I realized maybe im not supposed to ā€œsolveā€ it and the confusion is literally part of listening to it. #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

I feel like in my world, everyone would speak warped Montenegrin because technically Croatia, Serbia and Bosnia already speak different dialects of it which are similar, and I think it would have rules as to what phrases were used in specific times that are unusual now. #hwa4 #lostandremade

The sounds are familiar enough for me to follow, but I can't fully connect them to meaning. This makes me feel like both a speaker and a stranger. I'm genuinely curious about what it means to be fluent. #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

in colonial africa, it shows that students were beaten for speaking their native tongue in schools. Translation has the power to warp how reality is viewed and how it is defined for others, so those who create it are at a loss and those who change their reality benefit #hwa4 #translationasviolence

Ontological slippage means a time when the real meaning is a blur because there is a mix of many things happening. It shows up at 38:45 when we talk about chatgpt slippage. I feel this is true as i have witnessed this in some instances while asking for translation.

What stood out to me is how the exact same sounds can create two totally different experiences depending on what language you know. One person hears something simple, while someone else is getting way more imagery and meaning from it. #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

As I discussed previously a great example is the bible. The church did not allow the bible to be translated to the common tongue so average people could not make their own translation. They keep more power this way. The average person lost the ability to decide meaning. #hwa4 #translationasviolence

Yingelishi will change the way I approach future SMEs by challenging me to think beyond a linear track of thought. It brings up angles with multiple mediums and encourages you to dissect them. Revealing a word where they combine to create a completely new idea. #hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes

At first it sounded almost calming to me, but once I paid more attention I started noticing the sounds of the words more than the meaning. Its weird because my brain still keeps trying to turn it back into normal English. #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

After a while, some of the sounds sound like English, but then they change into something else. It makes me think about how much I depend on words I already know to make sense of what I hear. #hwa4 #yingelishiparty

In my imaginary world everyone speaks English, but centuries of mistranslation changed words so much that nothing has one exact meaning anymore. Before signing contracts or making big decisions, ppl have to explain what they think words means so nobody assumes the wrong thing. #hwa4 #lostandremade

Schechner said translation is a restored behavior. Meaning we do it over and over again. In the lecture you use memes as an example. We use these over and over again and constantly change the meaning as we use it. This is performative as we decide the meaning whenever we want. #hwa4 #translationacts

in my imaginary world, the word "literally" is mistranslated to mean "I actually have to do this." so whenever someone says "I'm literally dying," an ambulance shows up. too many people are saying "literally" #hwa4 #lostandremade

#hwa4 #whatlisteningmakes My biggest take away from Yingelishi was how it forced me to confront the friction as a listener, and even intentionally engaged to the friction at certain points. For example, there were several times throughout each poem where I, from my English perspective, found that

I almost want to speak along because the sounds make sense, but I'm not sure if I'm following the language or just moving to the beat. #hwa4 #yingelishiparty
