Does somebody need a hug? Actually, if you’re an insect, it’s best to avoid a hug from a Flower Crab Spider! The same #spider who appears in the post above – this time with alt text, which I somehow missed last time. #Arachtober #Invertebrates #UKWildlife 🌿

Photo of a Flower Crab Spider (Misumena vatia) lying in wait for prey near the top of an Orchid flower spike. We are looking at the flower spike from above, with the spider perched on the side of the spike and facing up towards us. The cephalothorax (the combined head and thorax), which is much smaller than the large ovoid abdomen behind it, is - along with the palps and legs which extend from it - a slightly yellowish white in colour, the yellow tint being stronger around the eyes and towards the tips of the palps and legs. The first two pairs are held open (the right legs pointing down towards the bottom of the picture and the left legs towards the top left), ready to spring forward and grab any insect landing on the flower spike in front of the spider. The third and fourth pairs of legs are holding on the flowers. The abdomen is white, with a hint of pale green on the upper surface. The Orchid flowers are a pale pink or purple in colour, with darker pink/purple spots and streaks.

Walking the dog this morning, happy to see 3 native Neoscona orbweavers. (For context, around 50 Joro webs.) I went back to photograph this one.

Big round spider at the center of a web; mostly brown, has some black markings and red on hind femurs. Tiny eyes are shining, reflecting the flash.

An adult male zebra jumping spider notable for his greatly enlarged, elongated black fangs (chelicerae) and long pedipalps, which they use during territorial standoffs with other males and courtship displays for females 🌱

Black and white jumping spider, looks like quite a brute but is only a couple of millimetres across and harmless to humans. Mostly eats other, larger, garden spiders.

#Arachtober for today, a very leggy cellar spider (family Pholcidae), casts two shadows on the wall of the art gallery it is living in. Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum west of Tucson, Arizona, USA. #bugsky #bugwatching #spiders #arachnids

Very long-legged spider, upside down in a web, casting a double shadow on the wall behind it.

Taracus carmanah!!!

Known only from its type localities and specimens. Somehow we found one individual during a bioblitz last weekend. These are the first photos of a live individual, and is the first individual seen alive! Still buzzing from this find.

#arachtober A full on gated spider community has grown up on this part of the creek that we call frog home. (cuz frogs live there)

A number of spider-webs strung over a creek. Many green things grow around the edges of the brown water. Many flies buzz around the area. Foolish flies.

A very small and pretty cobweb weaver for #Arachtober

Photo of a small red-orange-brown spider standing on the tip of a leaf. The spider has large, dark visible pedipalps and long spindly orange legs. The back part is mottled with dark reddish brown. The visible hairs on the leaf provide a sense of scale that the spider is very small. The background is out of focus green.

From a few weeks ago, an Ivy #Bee was feeding on the Marjoram (before the Ivy flowered). As he went from 🌸 to 🌸 he was oblivious to the Flower Crab #spider that lurked in wait. When it came to it, he was too quick and the spider went hungry. #wildlifefrommywindow #arachtober #invertebrates

A square photo of a woody brown stem of Marjoram with flower heads hanging off the side of it. They're light green with tiny white flowers at the end. The bee is hanging head down from the top most flower head, as it travels downwards to other flowerheads. The bee has thick pale yellow and black stripes on it's abdomen, and light grey fluffy hairs under its thorax. On the second lowest flower head, in the shade, is a small white crab spider. It is watching the bee approach with its front legs spread ready to pounce.

"In-between snacks"
I met this little #Arachnid in the garden, just hanging on a leaf. Was it just my imagination, or did it look at me with hungry eyes (cue in the Eric Carmen song!)?
#Arachtober #Invertebrates #SciArt #Macrophotography #GardenLife

Photo showing a brownish spider with its legs tucked high on either side if its body, following the contour of the leaf it is perched on. Eyes are black, looking quite intently at the photographer. Mmmmm, photographer... Ok, I'm outta here, enjoy Arachtober, everyone!
