#TonyBlair, the right-wing #Labour leader at the time, threatened #JeremyCorbyn with expulsion from the #LabourParty on #ThisDayInHistory in 1996 for inviting #SinnFéin leader #GerryAdams to meet. That Adams had already met with #BillClinton and #NelsonMandela went unremarked.

‘It is something I have to do, because that party are trying to strip away my identity and they won’t talk to me.’ She'll write to #AndyBurnham & deputy leader #LucyPowell about the ban.

Brothers, who first joined the party in 1981, added: ‘That is not the #LabourParty I have known over 45 years.

FORTY YEARS OF SERVICE, NOW EXCLUDED EMILY BROTHERS

PARTY SERVICE & ELECTIONS

Emily joined Labour in 1981.

She has stood as a parliamentary candidate twice, for the London Assembly in 2016, and in eight local elections.

She has served on the Executive Committees of LGBT Labour, Disability Labour, and the Fabian Society, is a member of The Co-operative Party, GMB, and Community.

EQUALITIES LEADERSHIP & HISTORIC MILESTONES

Andy Burnham (left), Emily Brothers (right)

Emily became Labour's first trans parliamentary candidate in 2014, and the first blind woman to stand for Parliament.

Her career includes major contributions to disability rights, serving with Disability Alliance and VOADL, as President of the National Federation of the Blind, and later working at the Equality and Human Rights Commission as Programme Head for Health and Local Government.

POLICY CONCERNS

Policy concerns: Labour now claims it is 'legitimate' to exclude trans women based on its interpretation of the Supreme Court ruling on 'biological sex', without explaining how this benefits women or how it meets proportionality tests.

THE INJUSTICE

Emily Brothers, a lifelong Labour member, has been banned as a Delegate to Women's Conference and excluded from women-reserved seats in National Policy Forum elections. This decision targets her as a blind, hearing-impaired trans woman who has devoted four decades to Labour and equality rights movements.

'Emily said:

"The Party should take immediate steps to remedy the injustice against trans people in particular those who hold a Gender Recognition Certificate and are legally the sex to which they worked so hard to obtain through years of transition. The Party should apologise to all the trans members impacted and reinstate me and the other trans women into our rightful positions from which we have been unfairly excluded. Going forward it is clear the law has to change. The impact of Supreme Court judgment (FWS v SGM) has been devastating to thousands of cisgender and trans women alike".

TWO DECADES OF ADVOCACY FOR WOMEN

So why is she banned from being a delegate at the Labour Party's National Women's Conference?

WOMEN'S HEALTH & RESEARCH

Baby Loss Research: Dedicated 20 years to researching the causes of baby loss.

Charity Leadership: Served as CEO of a Women's Health Charity.

Parliamentary Action: Authored report on endometriosis

research funding shortages and presented evidence to Parliamentarians.

Healthcare Access: Delivered deputations to politicians on the vital importance of Women's Health Hubs.

SAFETY & ANTI-VIOLENCE CAMPAIGNING

Documenting Femicide: Researched and wrote about 125 women and girls killed by a man.

Direct Action: Arranged and led night marches calling out violence against women and girls.

PARTY LEADERSHIP & RECOGNITION

CLP Women's Officer: Elected Women's Officer at her Constituency Labour Party for 3 consecutive years.

Conference Delegate: Selected as her CLP's delegate at Labour's National Women's Conference in 2022.

Election Candidate: Stood as a Labour Party candidate in the 2023 local elections.

Community Honours: Recipient of an 'Inspirational Woman of Portsmouth Award".

National Recognition: Shortlisted as a 'Positive Role Model for Gender' alongside seven other women at the National Diversity Awards in 2025.

THE INJUSTICE

Despite two decades of dedicated research, anti-violence activism, and loyal service to the Labour movement, today she is banned from being a delegate-simply because Steph Richards is transgender.

Has to be said for all #EdDavey and #NigelFarage's talk, #ConsParty is still #OfficialOpposition, still has clear lead in votes over #LibDems, if anything is starting to restore it's support relatively to #ReformUK and next GE looks primarily again mainly battle between #LabourParty and Cons Party.
