@suereeve.bsky.socialToday here in Glasgow, a new statue of #NelsonMandela was unveiled. In Nelson Mandela place. Named for him in 1985, after he was given the freedom of this fine city in 1981, while incarcerated.
The person posting about this had also posted on FB.

@thisismyglasgow.bsky.socialThe new Nelson Mandela statue will be unveiled this afternoon, and there's part of me wondering, what with Glasgow being Glasgow, whether when the cover's finally remove, it will reveal that someone has already snuck a road cone onto his head!

@pastglasgow.co.ukOn this day in 1993, Nelson Mandela came to Glasgow to receive the Freedom of the City in person. The council had granted it in 1981, when he was still a prisoner on Robben Island, making Glasgow the first city in the world to do so.

@thisismyglasgow.bsky.socialAfter being freed from Prison, Mandela visited the city in 1993 and paid tribute to the people of Glasgow for the stand they took against apartheid in a country some 6,000 miles away.
@thisismyglasgow.bsky.socialA few years later, in a major bit of typically-Scottish political trolling, the name of the street on which the consulate was sited was changed by the City's Council from St George's Place to Nelson Mandela Place.

@thisismyglasgow.bsky.socialIn 1981, the then-imprisoned Mandela was given the freedom of the city (with Glasgow being the first city in the world to give him this honour).

@thisismyglasgow.bsky.socialIt's been sited so Mandela looks, hand raised, towards the former Glasgow Stock Exchange (just visible in the background), which was home to a South African Consulate during the Apartheid era.
