Earlier this year, Alicja Kwade had a magnificent solo-exhibition in museum M Leuven. In the catalogue, I compare her sculptures with scientific models: "In the sway of a simple model; A philosophical reflection on Alicja Kwade’s pendulum". Pdf: www.sylviawenmackers.be/documents/We... #Art #PhilSci

Exhibition catalogue of Alicja Kwade, called Dusty Die. The cover shows a white door.Double-page photo of ParaPosition, in which a heavy rock balances above a chair. The wall in the background shows a photo of gray clouds; a real window shows the inner garden.Fragment of my chapter. Scientists usually think and communicate about fictional systems by means of equations and specific names, such as the ‘simple pendulum’, ‘frictionless plane’ or ‘ideal gas’. In doing so, they simulate these abstract model systems mentally. At best, they leave behind cryptic squiggles on a blackboard. In Kwade’s work we encounter similar conceptual abstractions, but she renders them as physical, material objects. She presents us with massive rocks that appear to defy gravity in works like Superheavy Skies and ParaPosition, which make tangible the kind of configurations that scientists only imagine.
It’s like Kwade read Godfrey-Smith’s concept of scientific models as ‘imagined concrete systems’ that ‘would be concrete if real’ (or ‘fictional concreta’) and called his bluff. As if Kwade decided: let’s make them real, then!

1/3 What if the tiny vibrations of a single microtubule could generate an electric field strong enough to whisper signals 5 µm across the cytoplasm, effectively acting as a nanoscale antenna? #academicsky #microtubules #philsci

3/3 This doesn't say weak fields can't act—it says extraordinary claims need a quantitative bar. What would convince you that a tiny EM signal matters in a warm, noisy cell? #academicsky #philsci

So, last Wednesday I gave my PhD completion seminar, getting so close now! Thanks to all for the support over the years xx

1/3 What if a cloud of atoms could sniff magnetic fields with precision beyond the quantum‑noise limit—without fragile entanglement? This could reshape bio‑magnetic sensing. #academicsky #philsci

I believe there's an intersection of #Neurodivergence, #ChronicIllness, and #SystemicNeglect I call #CognitivelyDeferredPain

When you have the cognitive bandwidth to not experience pain directly, but it still takes a tremendous toll on that bandwidth

Collins and Thorne's "Large language models and scientific discourse: Where’s the intelligence?" is worthwhile. Standards re good vs. fringe science may arise in verbal discussion at labs, conferences-not in training data. So LLMs don't know the difference. link.springer.com/article/10.1... #philsci

#philsky #philsci Will Hesperance finally face her innate fear consciously, so it can be transformed from a paralyzing force into a motivator for growth and creativity in the pursuit of more mani-pedi dates to Happy Clawz with Ferdinand?

1/3 What if a quantum particle bouncing inside a box could keep its wave packet intact — no spreading, no decoherence? New math builds such 'coherent states' for quantum billiards. Could confined biology do the same? #academicsky #quantumphysics #philsci

Silvia De Toffoli and I wrote a guest article for Terence Tao's blog in response to the recent AI Navier-Stokes result. We argue that the 'AI has "solved" mathematics' idea rests on two assumptions, both seductive & plausible, but both wrong. #philsci #AI #math terrytao.wordpress.com/2026/09/12/a...
