At our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek, St Margaret's, Newlands, Glasgow, the floor has a marvellous mosaic. It was laid in 1958 to celebrate the church's 50th anniversary. The mosaic shows children, plus their playthings, and represents children from past congregations.

Hallucination a 🧵- #AI with practical relevance to followers of #MosaicMonday.
AI (I call him Hal these days - we are getting on really well) tells me:
'Why I "Hallucinate". I do not actually *know* facts. I predict the next logical word in a sentence based on probability. If you ask me for ... 1/5

As problem floors are a bit of a theme in my life at the moment, here's a 'spot-the-delightful-bouncy animals' one from Ras al-Hillal in Cyrenaica (modern Libya). Byzantine, I think. Wonder whether this still survives? Context follows. 1/2

A much-damaged square panel from an ancient mosaic. At lower left are the foreparts of an animal. At upper right is a striped animal chasing another at upper centre which turns its head back to look at its pursuer. The animals look as if they are playing but maybe not! On the right is part of a tree with dark leaves spreading towards the plain border.

Do you feel like you’ve just been tossed unceremoniously into a chariot race? Welcome to the all new *empathetic* #MosaicMonday where your feelings about still having to engage in capitalism while tech billionaires ruin it for us all are validated by ancient mosaics.

So, this is a great opportunity to ask all followers of #MosaicMonday what they think the pointy feature is below the animals. (Hint: some ideas seem more likely than others but no one really knows for sure. Including me 😁)

#MosaicMonday 🏺
Unusual floor from 2C BC #Roman Taranto, excavated 1940.
Panel w recurring wavy border frames a large lozenge w acanthus leaves in a radial pattern of alternating autumnal colours plus 'pistrice' (sea monster) in the corner.
In MArTA.

A little over a quarter of central design of a mosaic floor in red, tan, black and white tesserae. Red on white wave pattern has a solid red surround, and a white band with in it. Inside that is a 90 degree offset square band with a pattern in a non-repeating design in all the colours. This contains a circle of dotted red, tan and white tiles, within which are radiating acanthus leaves in alternating red, white tan colours on a black background. And in the corner on a black background is a pestrice - a sea monster.

This Coptic church was opened in 2017 in the heart of Melbourne. In its entrance lobby (on the ground floor of a large office block) is this vibrant mosaic of the holy family fleeing to Egypt. I love the donkey with his knowing glance.

Golden glow✨ The high altar niche of San Giacometto in Venice at Rialto has a mosaic backdrop behind Alessandro Vittoria’s 1602 marble statue of St James. Commissioned by the Casaroli guild, the warm tesserae act as a light reflector in the dim nave. #MosaicMonday
