The last few years before the First World War were an experimental time for fashion.

May 1911 illustration from the Madrid-based fashion magazine "La Moda Elegante Ilustrada" In an subtly curved Art Nouveau frame adorned with roses, a hand-colored lithographic print of a pale smiling woman in a long high-waisted light blue narrow-skirted dress of lightweight fabric with a wide swag of elaborate cream lace or eyelet embroidery around the skirt and white polka dots near the hem. The bodice also appears to be white spots on blue, with a short transparent cream overlay with a broad band of cream lace over the bust, elbow-length sleeves, and more lace at the not-very-high neck. She carries a furled matching blue parasol and wears a gigantic hat as wide as an umbrella with a white underbrim edged with black satin and a cluster of some kind of gigantic exotic-looking green and white flower buds the size of artichokes balanced up top.

Girolamo Giuseffi decided to throw it all at this gown. It needed cut velvet panels, lace, chiffon overlays, net, rhinestones and silk covered baubles. He also decided that electric blue & cream would make the most vivid impression & he wasn’t wrong. Gown c1912 #newfieldstoday #FashionHistory 🗃️🪡
