On 16 Sept 1642 Rosa O'Doherty signed this letter. This is possibly a unique surviving example of a 17thC signature of a #Gaelic Irishwoman. (The letter is now in @ucdarchives.bsky.social as part of the Franciscan collection)

Pangrattato. Italian grandmothers have called it poor man's parmesan for four hundred years. Cost: nothing. Keeps a week in a jar.

Aran — bread.

What does your house do with the stale end?

[Original post on thistlenfern.org]

A glass jar has spilled a coarse golden seasoning or crumb mixture onto crumpled parchment, with a spoonful in the foreground and scattered bits around it. Garlic cloves and a parsley leaf are visible nearby on a wooden surface.

I know 2 languages...

Scots
English

#Gaelic is foreign to me & millions of other Lowland Scots.
Scots should be told if Gaelic will be imposed if #Scotland becomes independent, which is very unlikely.

LUMARAIDH ~ baggage, luggage; belongings more generally

Entry: www.faclair.ac.uk/entries/81

This word is attested only from 1972 when it was used by Dr Finlay MacLeod in Na Balaich air Rònaidh, and where its sense was ‘gear’.

“Scientists searched for the inclusion of the #Gaelic words for oyster or oysters – eisir, eisirein and eisirean – and oyster habitats… They then found an oyster bed that had not been previously documented”

The discoveries could help rebuild native oyster populations
