Today's diversion from Saga #PlaceNames and #Whisky... well it has to be #Shrooms... I think this might be Suede Bolete (Xerocomus subtomentosus AKA Boletus subtomentosus L.) Found in mixed woodland with lots of Birch. Common. #Fungi

Colour photo of a mushroom with a semicircular brown velvety looking cap and a striate looking stipe. It is nestled on a mossy woodland floor.

Spending time in Caithness prowling round #OrkneyingaSaga #PlaceNames! Today: Ham (hǫfn 'harbour, safe haven'), Halkirk (hár & kirkja 'church'), Scrabster (perhaps pers name Skári & bólstaðr ‘dwelling, farm’) but we did drive thru Forss (fors ‘waterfall’) & Murkle (myrkr 'muddy’ & hóll ‘hill’) too!

Colour photo of a small sheltered bay with a rocky shore, evidence of a stone built cassie-style pier, cliffs beyond and a blue sky. The place is Ham in Caithness, a simplex place-name from ON hÇŤfn 'harbour, safe haven'.

Eileamaid na seachdaine

-dal 'valley'

ThĂ inig seo bhon fhacal Lochlannach 'dalr' a tha a' ciallachadh gleann

This comes from the Old Norse word 'dalr' which means valley

Thoir dhuinn ainm dal a tha a' còrdadh ribh!

Spent a lovely afternoon in the fab @orkneylibrary.bsky.social #Archives this afternoon trawling a few more records for #PlaceNames! Today's focus was #Stronsay with names from a manuscript map and a poor distribution list! Love the drawing of the house of Huip! #Orkney

Collage of three photos of documents. One shows a little drawing of a house called Huip, another is titled 'Return for Stronsay Distribution 3rd June 1837, the last lists some of the places in the list.

I need to finish a little early today as I have a meeting, so I'll finish in Staines. We've had a really good set of songs today. Thanks for all your input. #placenames
