In Jespersen's Cycle, a direct object becomes negation.

Take French "pas" (step). From phrases like "I'm not moving a step," the "ne... pas" negation arose.

#Coptic had a similar Ⲛ︦... ⲀⲚ structure, but the etymology was unclear until now.

Ⲓt's "piece"!

Prague Egyptological Studies, #OpenAccess and out now!

Note my etymology of the #Coptic negation (Ⲛ︦)... ⲀⲚ, which likely spread into some Arabic & Berber.

As suspected since 1904, it arose much like the French (ne)... pas.

Kudos to Oxford's Bodleian Library, for putting the Oxyrhynchus papyri online with expansive licenses permitting quick image-use. 🎉😍

They also automated it, so you can easily obtain high-resolution files.

An unnamed Egyptian mummy made a long journey until she finally settled in the Treasures of the World Museum in Wichita, Kansas, USA, where she became known as
"The Lady with the Braids" because of her rare braided hairstyle..

Hi #Egyptology peeps!
Anyone know the logic behind translating „mfk3t“ as „Turquoise“? Is Hathor Lady of Turquoise bc it was briefly popular (when?!? Early Dyn or something?) or bc Some Guy™️ in the 19th c. arbitrarily decided mfk3t was turquoise & not, IDK, malachite or something actually common.
