In Jespersen's Cycle, a direct object becomes negation.

Take French "pas" (step). From phrases like "I'm not moving a step," the "ne... pas" negation arose.

#Coptic had a similar Ⲛ︦... ⲀⲚ structure, but the etymology was unclear until now.

A fun peculiarity in the history of Egyptian #Arabic --

Its French-like "(ne)... pas" negation likely came from #Coptic speakers who knew Arabic as a second language.
