When the House isn’t sitting, you can see the Chamber and walk through a voting lobby when you visit.

Light streams in through the carved windows of the voting lobby onto the wooden panelled walls.

These desks pull out and were once used to note down the names of the MPs who were voting. Nowadays we use electronic pass readers instead.

Two desks at the exit of the voting lobby are pulled back against the wall. Tracks are visible where the desks can be pulled closer together, to enable only one person to pass between them at a time.

They lead to the voting lobbies, where MPs go to register their vote on business of the House. When they have gathered on their chosen side, the entrance is locked. They are counted by two tellers as they exit, one MP from the Aye side and one supporting the No side.

A voting lobby in the House of Commons, a long corridor with green benches on one side and bookshelves on the other. A large stone arch frames the start of the corridor.

Have you ever noticed the doors at the side of the Commons Chamber?

Written Parliamentary Questions enable MPs to seek information, investigate issues and hold ministers to account through detailed written answers, with every question and response published online as part of the public record.

The House of Commons Procedure Committee has recently published a report examining how well the Written Parliamentary Questions system is working in the Commons.

Graphic featuring a portrait of Cat Smith MP alongside a quote from her about the recent Procedure Committee report about Written Parliamentary Questions. The text reads: "Written Parliamentary Questions are an important tool for MPs, allowing us to obtain accurate information on matters of public interest, and scrutinise the government. In our latest Report, my Committee recommends system changes to ensure Written Parliamentary Questions better serve this core purpose."
