In short, we show that: • Shear stress induces transient donut-shaped mitochondria in kidney epithelial cells • Flow transiently stabilizes ER–mito contacts • It promotes ER–LD–mito triple contact sites • VMP1 is required for fatty acid transfer from LDs to mitochondria
