Germany's Die Linke won last month's Berlin election on a pledge to socialize ~220k flats owned by large landlords. A thread on why housing expropriation is a successful campaign promise, how Berlin's flats became an asset class, and what expropriation would do. 🧵

Front page of die tageszeitung (taz), 21 September 2026: Die Linke supporters cheer under the headline 'CDU enteignet' ('CDU expropriated'). Photo: Jörg Carstensen/imago.Bar chart of the 2026 Berlin state election (second votes): Linke 25.7% (2023: 12.2%), CDU 18.8% (28.2%), AfD 16.3% (9.1%), Greens 14.3% (18.4%), SPD 12.1% (18.4%), BSW 4.7%, FDP 2.5% (4.6%).

Thank you Anton :)

I think it is both green politics being perceived as costly & the Greens not just being seen as the issue owner, but also too much of a single issue party. In a supplementary analysis I show that across most-important-issues, voters generally perceive the Greens less fit to address them post-shock.

Thank you Ruth, that is very kind!

This highlights the relevance of voters’ pocketbooks and the need for green parties to convincingly address material concerns to ensure lasting electoral success.

What do I find? Voters facing financial hardship consistently evaluate the Greens more negatively and shift their political attention toward inflation and economic growth, while deprioritizing climate protection.

@frederikthieme.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 8:54 AM

Using panel data from Germany, I present a longterm correlational analysis of voters’ perceived personal economic conditions and Green party support. Additionally, I exploit the sudden price shock following the Russian invasion of Ukraine using a difference-in-differences design.

@frederikthieme.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 8:54 AM

Why do green parties struggle electorally despite widespread support for climate action? My new (first 😱) paper explores why green parties remain uniquely challenged in economic crisis & that the mechanism is not only about sociotropic concerns, but also voters’ pocketbooks 🧵
