Arkadiusz Borek (Polish Academy of Sciences) on 'Changes and Significance of Territorial Divisions in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth in the Eighteenth Century'

#Politics #Territory #Poland #Lithuania #History 18thc 🗃️

👉Open access: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

The territorial divisions of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth were stable for most of its existence. They were characterized by dualism: in the Kingdom of Poland, territorial divisions and their connection to public institutions were organic; in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, these matters were strictly ordered. Changes appeared in the eighteenth century, when we can observe localized modifications in the network of territories, and during the Partitions period two systematic reforms were passed. The detailed analysis of such changes clearly shows that the ruling class of the Commonwealth was mainly interested in the political aspects of the territorial divisions: the distribution of prestige by the creation of new land offices connected to new territories, and the use of territorial units as constituencies. This second aspect was the main motivation behind the reforms after the First and Second Partitions. The political and election-focused approach to the system of territorial divisions highlights the difference between the Commonwealth and major European states in this period.

Manka Mtoi (Mwalimu Nyerere Memorial Academy) on 'Beliefs and Moral Order in the Sisal Plantations of Tanga, Tanzania, 1920s–1960s'

#Moral #Indigenous #History #Thought #Emotion #Agency 20thc 🗃️

👉Read open access here: www.cambridge.org/core/service...

This article explores moral order through two cultural beliefs of usinga and limbwata as they operated in the coastal Tanga’s sisal plantations in north-eastern Tanzania, between the 1920s and the 1960s. Drawing on archival records, oral histories, and theoretical frameworks from historical anthropology, feminist epistemology, labour history, and post-colonial critique, it argues that these practices functioned as adaptive moral and emotional technologies rather than mere superstition. Usinga, a deadly curse linked to adultery, reinforced marital boundaries, social order, and communal hierarchies. At the same time, limbwata, interpreted as emotional and spiritual binding by women, operated as a form of affective and economic agency, enabling women to secure loyalty and redistribute resources within male-dominated plantation spaces. The article situates these beliefs within the broader historiography of Africa, highlighting the limitations of colonial, Marxist, and secular feminist frameworks that often overlooked Indigenous epistemologies. By analysing how migrant labour, gendered power relations, and cosmological imagination intersected in Tanga’s plantation economy, the article demonstrates that usinga and limbwata served as instruments of social regulation, moral critique, and gendered negotiation.

Matthew Roberts @historytrainsman.bsky.social @sheffieldhallamuni.bsky.social on 'Cobden, Peel, the Anti-Corn Law League, and the Politics of Feeling in Mid-Victorian Britain'

#Political #History #Emotions 19thc 🗃️

👉Read open access here: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

The repeal of the Corn Laws in June 1846 was a key moment in the consolidation of a political culture that emphasized rationality, restraint and aversion to the politics of passion. Both the prime minister, Sir Robert Peel, and the Anti-Corn Law leader, Richard Cobden, laboured to ensure that Corn Law repeal took place in an atmosphere of calmness and control. Cobden and Peel embodied syncretic variants of an ascetic politics which eschewed sentimentalism, elements of which could be found in both the Conservative Party and the Anti-Corn Law League. Although the League sometimes struggled to strike the right balance between these rival forms, by the mid-1840s, thanks in part to Cobden’s leadership, the League’s affective politics had been fine-tuned. Had that fine tuning not taken place, it would have added significantly to Peel’s difficulties in 1846. By drawing on recent work on the history of emotions, this article develops a new approach to the study of political culture which foregrounds the central, albeit contested, role of feeling. It concludes with a discussion of the affective basis of the mid-Victorian ‘age of equipoise’, to which repeal contributed significantly.

Lewis Ryder @lewisryder.bsky.social (University of Lincoln) on 'The History and Legacy of British Colonial Looting'

#Historiography #Review #Looting #Museums #Objects 18thc 19thc 🏛️🗃️

👉Read open access here: www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

This historiographical review surveys the scholarship on British colonial spoils of war, outlining and critically analysing the main arguments and approaches as well as the new directions taken by recent authors. Moreover, it seizes the opportunity to take stock of what we know to address one of the field’s main issues – its disjointed nature. Scholars have mostly focused on a particular object, collection, or war, and so our understanding has developed piecemeal. By producing something resembling a bird’s eye view of British colonial spoils in the long nineteenth century, this review outlines some broader patterns, change over time and across geographies, and identifies areas in need of further study. It does so by structuring the discussion around three key topics/approaches: practices, customs, and law; the social and cultural lives of loot; and the decolonial critique of museums.
