Yale alums defending academic freedom in higher education.
Someone chalked this on Beinecke Plaza during the protest on 10/2, predicting this very situation. Yale students don't have opportunities to speak with McInnis - it's no wonder they used her photo op as a chance.
Yale alumni speak out in Yale Alumni Magazine about the ongoing negotiations between the university and Mr. Trump. www.yalealumnimagazine.com/articles/628...

Wow. Yale President McInnis caught on a hot mic speaking disparagingly of a student who asked her about democratizing Yale. '“Anyway, she was one of those students who shows up pissed off,” McInnis told Lewis, referring to a student who approached her at the anniversary event.'

On October 2, hundreds joined Democratize Yale’s march to Beinecke Plaza to demand a more democratic Yale and oppose a settlement with the Trump administration.

“There are people who want to stand up and defend this school in court,” Elias Theodore, a Yale College senior and Democratic member of the New Haven Board of Alders, said. “If Yale capitulates to Trump, it will embolden him to keep doing this to universities and institutions across the country.”
“Yale is a leader in America, which makes its potential appeasement all the more despicable,” Blumenthal said. “Yale should know that appeasement is not a strategy, that acquiescing to a bully just emboldens and encourages him. And here, the ‘him’ is Donald Trump.”

On Friday, 10/2, Stand Up for Yale joined students and faculty at Yale protesting the administration's efforts to cut a deal with Trump by constructing a replica of the famous Lipstick sculpture - a symbol of freedom of speech from the 1960s. A thread of news articles for you...
I participated in these protests. If the photo panned out, I might even be in it. And even as an idealistic young undergrad, I was never as ashamed of my college as I am now that Yale is considering bowing the knee to Trump.
