To continue our #Inktober & #Spooktober theme, we are highlighting the use of real #zebrafish embryos as our canvas! π¨ππ₯ Enjoy these spooky "Fish-O-Lanterns" expressing a photo-activated fluorescent protein π Credit to @harrymcnamara.bsky.social & @adamezracohen.bsky.social π€© #NoAI #ZebrafishZunday

Very happy our work on a weird new nanoscale morphological feature is out in @science.org. A massive effort involving different high resolution microscopy techniques, multiple institutes, & years of work to convince ourselves DENDRITIC NARROWINGS EXIST #neuroskyence π§ͺ doi.org/10.1126/scia...
Really happy to see this work from the Shapiro lab. New colleagues in an exciting new field!
For in vivo (mouse) imaging of neural firing, we see ~30% bleaching after ~1 h of recording. Depends a lot on imaging intensity, dye, tissue conditions, etc.
And if you want to buy an ultra wide-field voltage imaging setup, with patterned optogenetic stim: www.luminosmicro.com
The tutorial focuses on practical implementation. Highlights:
an interactive database of voltage indicators: gevibench.org;
open-source instrument-control code for optical electrophysiology: www.luminosmicroscopy.com;
Some particularly useful data analysis scripts: github.com/adamcohenlab...
We wrote a tutorial guide on voltage imaging, now out in Neuron: authors.elsevier.com/a/1nlgh3BtfH...
Indicators, microscopes, and software have all advanced to the point that it's not so hard -- you can now directly watch the electrical activity of neurons in live animals or in culture.
Here's another, showing raw voltage throughout the dendritic tree, the virtual reality location of the animal, the mouse-eye view, and the voltage at the neuron's soma.
I wrote about the government's attacks on Harvard. Hope this reaches a few persuadable minds.
