Paleogenomics research is revealing the complex history of bison, overturning assumptions about the ubiquity of cattle ancestry and showing that their decline did not markedly affect genetic diversity, although it has increased population fragmentation.

Wood bison such as this one, photographed near Muncho Lake Provincial Park in Canada’s Northern Rockies, split from plains bison ~3000 years ago but have plains ancestry from early 20th-century management. Paleogenomics research is revealing the complex history of bison, overturning assumptions about the ubiquity of cattle ancestry and showing that their decline did not markedly affect genetic diversity, although it has increased population fragmentation. An accompanying news feature explores how genomic findings are guiding conservation.

Health officials are raising alarms about loneliness and isolation. Can researchers identify what helps?

Series of donut charts comparing the numbers of studies on loneliness and social isolation. They are colored according to delivery. Pink: Societal-level delivery (e.g. public policy, neighborhood design). Light green: Community-based delivery (e.g. group activities, volunteering). Dark green: Interpersonal delivery (e.g. social support, cognitive behavioral therapy). Gray: Self delivery (e.g. self-guided therapy, social skills training). Less than 1% of studies tested interventions delivered at the societal level.

Researchers report the first genome sequence of the 194-year-old Aldabra giant tortoise Jonathan, the oldest known living land animal.

Dorsal scute of an Aldabra giant tortoise shell. Recent longevity studies have used comparative genomic analysis to reveal gene markers with the potential to slow aging and inhibit cancer in long-lived species. Vaisvil et al. report the first genome sequence of the 194-year-old Aldabra giant tortoise Jonathan, the oldest known living land animal. DNA methylome analysis showed that comparatively lower-entropy regions in Jonathan’s methylome were linked to higher-fidelity gene transcription and more efficient DNA repair, energy production, and RNA processing. These findings support a model for aging where efficient energy production supports robust DNA repair, thus preserving genomic integrity and potentially contributing to improved longevity.

Our more in-depth story on the sudden shut down of Chronicle Heritage. I talk to a handful of employees who recount their experience and concerns following the company’s dissolution.

Many worry about the thousands of artifacts still in Chronicle’s care.

Birds lay eggs in a diverse array of colors, patterns, sizes, and shapes.

After looking at nearly 50,000 eggs from more than 1400 bird species, researchers in Science found that egg shape is related to flight ability.

A small village in Sardinia could become a new “blue zone” of longevity, after researchers found that women there live remarkably long lives.

But critics say the blue zone concept rests on shaky science. https://scim.ag/3TwCz6q
