They quoted me in this New Yorker piece about AI today.
www.newyorker.com/culture/the-...

“Let’s say there’s a world or time line I exist in where A.I. has been subject to regulation. It is ethical. It has no footprint environmentally,” the novelist Jeff VanderMeer, a prominent critic of A.I., told me over the phone. “With those guardrails in place, would I read an A.I. book? All I can say is no. And the reason is, in part, because I want to read something coming from a particular mind.” Using A.I., he said, “feels like a betrayal of the whole point of why you’re a writer.”

This month we read the Last Contract of Isako by Fonda Lee - as selected by the wonderful @elizachanwrites.bsky.social

We chat characterisation, the importance of setting to a plot, and if you had the choice, would you become a robot?

Glaciers collapse, disasters ensue. And then we’re expected to ignore all that because we can make fun AI images and google can badly summarise Wikipedia. Seriously. AI - Fuck off.

Children are people. When you have a kid, you make a person, and that person is not going to follow a script. If you think your kid is one thing and they're actually another, your job as a parent is to support them and set them up for success, not punish them for wanting different pronouns.

"a perfect choice if you are looking for a historical inspired fantasy that, while it takes the opportunity to be serious and examine big themes, also decides to be funnier at moments"

Thanks for this wonderful review @jamreads.com

Look at this beauty! A clue to my story is on the back cover but took me a while to spot myself! Haverin is the 40 year anniversary anthology of the GSFWC. Looking forward to celebrating this at Fcon in October.
