The new (slightly revised) Red List of European Moths has been published by the EU. A summary and links to downloads can be found on our website. Moths play a vital role in ecosystems and there is also an important new document on how to plan for their conservation

A really pretty Vestal in our NE Essex garden. @bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social
Some colour this morning in our NE Essex garden. 3 Beautiful Marbled in the last 3 nights. @bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social
This Queen of Spain Fritillary was the undoubted highlight of a really good day in Rayne, Essex. Present in a wild bird crop, mainly Chia. Also c.10 Clouded Yellow plus multiple Brown Argus, Common Blue and Small Copper #insects #butterflies #bugs
@bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social
This has certainly be a Clouded Yellow year.
But this count from David in south Cambridgeshire is quite something.
And that's a good number of Common Blue these days too.

Did you hear our Chair @marcusrhodes.bsky.social talking about the #BigButterflyCount results on BBC Radio Cornwall this morning? Catch-up on BBC Sounds (interview starts at 3hr:43min) www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...
Right Norfolk dwellers, you've got the 2026 WAINWRIGHT PRIZE WINNERS Robert Macfarlane and Jackie Morris talking in Norwich next Thursday. Tickets not quite sold out yet. Come along, they are both amazing. And deserved winners! www.theguardian.com/books/2026/s...
@chrisvanswaay.eurosky.social not C hyale?
I think this is a Clouded Yellow f. helice but a really pale one (rather than something rarer). It's being backlit and hopefully it shows the lack of black on the upper wing. I initially thought it was Green-veined White when seen in flight. Babraham, Cambs, today. @bc-cambs-essex.bsky.social
I like this article about the Big Butterfly Count by @patrickbarkham.bsky.social
Doesn't just repeat the press release, but also informed opinions from @richardfoxbc.bsky.social and Matthew Oates. Latter is optimistic that next year won't be a disaster after all.

Will next year see a butterfly slump after this year's lovely year of (relative) abundance? I spoke to Matthew Oates and Richard Fox to find out more. Personally, I'm hopeful. www.theguardian.com/environment/...

A huge thank you to the 101,565 of you who took part in this year's #BigButterflyCount!
While many widespread butterfly species had a good summer, drought and record heat could impact next yearβs populations.
