I'm a neuroscientist with a special focus on nutrition, metabolism and mitochondria. Always happy to chat about brain aging (or any kind of aging), great books to read, travel, food and writing.

The way you talk may predict the rate you are aging.

I often notice when an older person has a 'young voice': more intonation, livelier, clearer.πŸ§ͺ

Now there's a study showing that 'young voices' really do indicate a slower aging rate using ~3000 people and AI.

Social closeness may promote longevityπŸ§ͺ

This study showed the blood sugar, temperature regulation improved when close to a loved one

There is no muscle memory for the heart, since it's all involuntarily controlled by the brainstem/hypothalamus eg we don't 'learn' how to contract our hearts Hormones definitely might be playing a role!

@esiobhanmitchell.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 6:02 AM

the paper seems to imply something in our blood is telling hearts what age to be, so we just need to find that out !

@esiobhanmitchell.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 6:01 AM

Oh I wish! But once we know how hearts learn to become younger, maybe we can put that in a bottle for the rest of our bodies

@esiobhanmitchell.bsky.socialSep 25, 2026, 4:46 AM

Cool study: older hearts transplanted into younger subjects become 'young'!πŸ§ͺπŸ‘©β€πŸ”¬

The transplanted heart's biological age shifts to match the new body, not the original donor.

This was seen in both mice and humans. The next step is to understand why πŸ«€

Brilliat new paper : The brain is two separate organs that develop in parallel

One organ is for controlling breathing, temperature, heart function, and the other organ is for thinking. They form separately and then join together during development πŸ§ͺ

New episode of MitoPod is live. We break down creatine from first principles - the phosphocreatine system, ATP production, muscle loss with age & why it matters more for women than most people realise.

when it's phosphorylated creatine can be used as a way to regenerate ATP quickly. Creatinine is a waste product occasionally made when creatine converted to its active form (usually cleared by kidneys, but when it's not it indicates poor kidney function)

@esiobhanmitchell.bsky.socialSep 14, 2026, 11:14 PM

The question on creatine is no longer about whether to take it but HOW to take it, to benefit brain, muscle and health span πŸ§ͺ

This podcast goes into how to improve creatine in terms of #ATP production, brain #creatine and less #inflammation

both molecules work on mitochondria protection, indicating an interesting therapeutic area for liver health

@esiobhanmitchell.bsky.socialSep 13, 2026, 7:45 PM

An example of why you don't need to inject grey-market peptides:
This study showed that oral MitoQ performed just as well as injected SS-31 in a preclinical liver health study.πŸ§ͺ

MitoQ and SS-31 improved insulin/glucose, ALT/AST and mitochondria function

Fascinating study looking at biological aging clocks (tests predicting when you might die). πŸ§ͺ

The best interventions to improve biological aging focuse on decreasing inflammation (TNF-alpha, cats claw) but some supplements (folate, quercetin) made aging accelerate
