Today is the birthday of artist John Forte (Oct. 6, 1918-May 20, 1966). He drew for a variety of publishers in the Golden Age, such as Timely/Marvel & Fiction House, but is probably most remembered today for his work on the early years of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

A black and white photo of Forte.A splash page from the Legion of Super-Heroes story, "The Super-Moby Dick of Space!" It shows Superboy, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Lad confronting a giant, flying green whale with small red wings. Lightning Lad wants revenge against the creature for costing him his right arm, which has been replaced by a bionic one.

I still recall the comics-culture shock I felt when I saw this Jim Starlin & Joe Rubinstein take on The Legion Of Super-Heroes in 1978. It was so totally unlike anything I’d seen from DC in the period, being very much the style Starlin had developed at Marvel. It felt dynamic & futuristic & exciting.
