Enpä tiennyt, mielenkiintoista. Aika poleeminen kaveri näyttää olevan ja ikävä kyllä bändi menee mulla kyllä nyt pois kuuntelulistoilta noilla meriiteillä. 😮‍💨 Limp Floyd, who’s next? 🤔

The only thing I have to add to the insane Englishness debate that is currently happening in the UK is that I never found anything that described the strangeness and, dare I say randomness, of identity better than this Peter Grant quote from @benaaronovitch.bsky.social’s River of London series:

“My Dad says that being a Londoner has nothing to do with where you're born. He says that there are people who get off a jumbo jet at Heathrow, go through immigration waving any kind of passport, hop on the tube and by the time the train's pulled into Piccadilly Circus they've become a Londoner."

One more documented controlled experiment. Does a factory reset actually clean the slate, or does it drop you straight into a privacy trap?

@hannahshelley.site have to say that I had no idea ”y2k website builders”, such neocities still existed. Brought back memories of a ”home page” long gone. Thaks for that. 😎 Still fond of static html, albeit generated.

Deshittification of your Smart TV at Home using OpenBSD pf and Unbound: block Ad Networks and Telemetry while keeping apps like Netflix and Smart TVs working flawlessly - Detailed Article by Lari Huttunen @svimes.inform.social #OpenBSD #Privacy fabricati-diem.inform.social/post/deshitt...

Part 3 of Deshittification as a Service is live!

We analyze webOS 26’s active network sabotage mechanics—from cold-boot consent traps to selective socket murder when local telemetry blocks are detected.

A technical illustration showing network interference between a router and a smart TV. On the left, a monitor displays an OpenBSD router running a Packet Filter and Unbound DNS blocking "wiselg.com". On the right, a webOS 26 TV screen is encased in ice with a red mechanical clamp squeezing the Netflix app. Red labels on the TV read "COLD-BOOT WATCHDOG: CONSENT TRAP", "TELEMETRY BLOCK DETECTED", "TCP RST WIN=0", "GDPR ART. 7(4) VIOLATION", and "SELECTIVE SOCKET MURDER: ACR TARGET".

Block LG's tracking servers and WebOS retaliates by locking you out of the App Store.

In Part 2 of my Deshittification series, I expose a blatant GDPR Article 7(4) forced consent violation.

A conceptual illustration of a homelab network. A router running pf and Unbound connects to a glowing red 'Gatekeeper' padlock, which blocks a tangle of wires filled with eyes and 'AD' tracking icons. Clean cables run from the gatekeeper to a Smart TV, where app icons like Netflix are held hostage behind red chains and padlocks. A smartphone sits in the foreground.

This post has piqued the interest of quite a crowd (a couple hundred from my perspective is huge). I guess frustration with surveillance capitalism is a shared feeling?

@doctorow.pluralistic.net your writing has been an inspiration for this work. 😎

1/ This @propublica.org story is just gobsmacking.

As table stakes: why does a family of billionaires need help paying for weddings?

And why would they accept from Russian oligarch with ties to Putin and FSB? www.propublica.org/article/dona...

Tarvitsemme yliopistoja, joissa valmistutaan hitaammin, opiskellaan laajemmin, on aikaa ajatella, ja voidaan keskittyä pitkäjänteiseen tieteeseen pikavoittojen sijaan. Poliitikkomme vastustavat sellaista, koska heille olisi kauhistus, jos nuoret ehtisivät ajatella mitä ovat tekemässä.

Privacy toggles in Smart TV menus do almost nothing. To stop telemetry and evasive DNS fallbacks, you have to enforce honesty at the network edge.

A conceptual technical illustration showing an OpenBSD gateway filtering network traffic. On the left, a chaotic mess of dark cables filled with surveillance eye icons and "AD" tags enters a silver mini PC labeled "OpenBSD," showing diagrams for "pf Packet Filter" and "Unbound DNS." On the right, clean teal data streams emerge from the router to connect to a Smart TV running webOS and a docked smartphone running Netflix. Glowing light-blue airflow lines and a lung icon above the TV represent CPU performance relief and a responsive user interface.

This Finnish guy has been teaching himself Sumerian, and sent a cuneiform tablet to the British Museum to check his progress.

They just emailed him that they've sent him something in the post.

I'm now thrilled and excited for a total stranger! Clay tablet mail!

Love it! From his post on Reddit

I have been studying sumerian for two years now. My problem has been that I have been studying by myself, from books only, without a teacher. I have been giving myself my own excercises, and checking them myself. As you might conceive, this creates something of an epistemic problem: how do I know if I am in the right or not?

I live in Finland, so I asked the local assyriological society for feedback. They said that Finland mostly has experts in akkadian, assyrian and hittite, with sumerian being somewhat of a blind spot with only one academic-level expert being active. He happens to be the same guy who wrote the textbook I am studying from.

I sent email to the author of my textbook, and I haven't had a reply in some weeks.

My next option was to send a sumerian tablet, asking for feedback, straight to the british museum. So I did just that. In sumerian. In cuneiform. I will give pictures as attachment.

I sent the tablet without any invoice or info about a week ago. Now I got an email that they have sent something to me in response. It means I have written something right, because the only request for a reply was in the tablet, written in sumerian.

I'm going to be entirely honest: I am stoked as hell.

Amazon's own balance sheet presents the most compelling evidence that we are stuck in the Enshittocene, the era in which everything is turning into a pile of shit, because the worst ideas of the worst people now make the most money. 1/

Hieronymus Bosch's 'The Conjuror,' a painting depicting a medieval con artist playing a shell game for an audience of astonished peasant rubes. The image has been altered: the conman now has Jeff Bezos's grinning head, and the mouths of all the peasants have been replaced with inverted Amazon 'Smile' logos, so they are now frowning.
