One more top tip: there is no one better than an English teacher and director of an educational charity to proof-read your book!

This is coming soon from @engmediacentre.bsky.social ! Largely the work of the stylistics gurus @stockwell.bsky.social and @jessnorledge.bsky.social with some classroom tips (and 'can you make that even simpler for people like me' requests) from me, it should be an excellent resource. More soon.

Ha! This is over several books. It’d be obvious whodunnit

Publisher’s royalty statement arrives. I have £7.32! Obviously don’t actually have it, as it is too low an amount to actually send me. Maybe can’t retire just yet.

I got 12! But that was best of around 50 attempts. This really shows you how many identikit plump shiny faced white men happen to be MPs

It’s important to put a ‘use of AI’ statement on our modules. Here’s mine:

The point of doing a stylistics analysis and essay is the process of learning how to be a stylistician. We will be supporting your ideas throughout the module as you develop your thinking. Your analysis is highly likely to be a unique application of a linguistic pattern in a literary text, so the large-language collator that is 'AI' will almost certainly produce a very mediocre piece of slop and drivel, for which you will get a terrible grade. You are better than that; have some self-respect. In short, don't be a loser: no 'AI'.

But if you treat data artefacts of a financial model as being more real than actual cash and real costs, then eliminating non-existent marginal costs while rejecting surplus income is where you end up. History will not be kind. 5/5

@stockwell.bsky.socialSep 19, 2026, 10:45 AM

Cutting a joint honours degree - even with tiny numbers of students in it - is simply throwing away their fee income for ZERO saving in cost. It is the dumbest thing that a bunch of clueless, non-teaching consultants can advise an unthinking management team to do. 4/5

@stockwell.bsky.socialSep 19, 2026, 10:45 AM

Joint honours degrees and pathways are easily designed with existing modules, existing staff, existing buildings, and with only a tiny increase in other facilities. 3/5

@stockwell.bsky.socialSep 19, 2026, 10:44 AM

If Degree A has 100 students and Degree B has 50 students, then the joint Degree AB brings in almost pure surplus - whether that is another 50 students or only 5 students. 2/5

@stockwell.bsky.socialSep 19, 2026, 10:44 AM

If Dept A and Dept B have 10 modules each for their degrees, say - then they can run 5 of those modules each as a joint honours course at virtually no extra cost at all. 1/5
