I first wrote about the need to recognize peer reviews as acts of scholarship back in 2006. It's a dream deferred, but not a dream denied. We're going to make this happen.
During the talk, Ludo will outline a new vision for research communication based on the Publish, Review, Curate (PRC) model—one that places openness, transparency, community participation, and scholarly judgment at its core.
Join us for the “Publish, Review, Curate (PRC): Shaping the future of scholarly publishing” launch event, where Ludo Waltman @ludowaltman.bsky.social, Scientific Director, Center for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) at Leiden University, will give a keynote talk.
In the Publish-Review-Curate model, peer review is given the recognition it deserves! The current publication system makes this important work invisible and doesn’t properly recognize it.

Peer review challenge: Trust
❌Unrealistic expectations of peer review, potentially undermining trust in science
✅ PRC is honest about what peer review is and isn’t able to provide

Peer review challenge: Capacity ❌Lack of peer review capacity ✅PRC makes better use of the limited peer review capacity
Peer review challenge: Diversity ❌Lack of diversity among peer reviewers ✅PRC enables open forms of participation in peer review
Peer review challenge: Openness ❌ Lack of openness and transparency in peer review ✅PRC makes peer review open and transparent
Peer review challenge: Quality ❌Variable quality of peer review ✅PRC recognizes that research outputs and peer reviews will always be of variable quality
Peer review faces many challenges: Quality, Openness, Diversity, Capacity, and Trust.
As @ludowaltman.bsky.social discussed at the University of Cambridge, the PRC model addressed those challenges! 🧵

Delays in the scientific publication system often stem from a lengthy, inefficient peer review process. Can we improve it? Yes! We can change the way things are ordered in the publication pipeline: first Publish, then Review and Curate!

"PRC makes the full process of scientific dispute visible: instead of concealing deliberation behind editorial decisions, it exposes disagreement, revision, and assessment as integral parts of scientific discovery."
