Short thread: 18 months ago, as part of their assault on higher ed, Trump/DOGE/Vought terminated my friend Kelton Minor's NIH Director's award that would have allowed him to take a faculty position there. Without the funds, Columbia ultimately rescinded the position. Kelton moved to Denmark.
Thanks for the excellent review!
Sickle cell disease isn't just a medical condition; it’s a history of racial bias in science. For too long, the "Black disease" label stunted research while millions suffered. "Curved Air" is the deep dive our community needs now. #BlackSky
New book for my all-time faves list – Curved Air: A Biography of Sickle Cell Anemia and the Quest to Cure the First Molecular Disease by Kevin Davies, 2026

Grateful to Laura Landro for her positive review of “Curved Air” in @wsj.com !
“Davies synthesizes an enormous body of scientific literature and history in this book, placing SCD at the intersection of biotechnology, medicine, race and public policy.”

This Wednesday, @kevinadavies.bsky.social discusses his new book, on how sickle cell anemia led the quest to edit the human genome while patients endured decades of racial discrimination and medical neglect.
I have some foreign language editions of my earlier books looking for a (free) good home. Message if anything catches your eye: - Breakthrough (1995) 🇬🇧 - Cracking the Genome/The Sequence (2001) 🇬🇧🇩🇪🇮🇳🇸🇪🇮🇹🇯🇵🇪🇸🇸🇦🇨🇿🇵🇹🇳🇱 - The $1,000 Genome (2010) 🇧🇷🇰🇷 - Editing Humanity (2020) 🇯🇵🇰🇷🇮🇹🇷🇺
Excited to be talking about "Curved Air" next Wednesday (Sept 9th) at @peoplesbooktakoma.com -- and hopefully sign a few copies! I'll be joined in conversation by Teonna Woolford, patient advocate and foundation director.
