With the @vox.com article out on people doing their own guerrilla bike lanes & crosswalks many folks are talking about #TacticalUrbanism.

We did a good @streetfilms.bsky.social on it about ten years ago with many of the movement's leaders!

Came across this supersized partial diverter with a chicane design along one of Minneapolis’s bike boulevards. Judging by the size of the trees it has been there a long time.

This is a massive game changer for those of us who bike Dekalb / Lafayette everyday and frequently ride the B38. These changes will make me comfortable allowing my 8yr old to ride alongside me as well. 🙌🏻

That is absolutely smooth compared to what I saw in Bed-Stuy today — just beyond the new ADA curb ramps and APS signals are mounded asphalt speed bumps for strollers, wheelchairs, etc. I’ll have to share photos… 🤦🏻‍♂️

Final point: the Ruelles Vertes is not just green infrastructure, it’s social infrastructure, cultural infrastructure, traffic-calming infrastructure etc. Montreal shows us that an any city’s alley system can be repurposed into something much greater than a place to store the garbage.

I particularly loved seeing all of the DIY street hockey/street soccer, toys, and children’s artwork, like this sign pointing to where all the neighborhood kids live.

Montreal’s block structure often includes an “H” alley pattern that allows multiple points of ingress/egress to be converted while still preserving resident and sanitation access. Traffic-calming (bumpouts, raise mid-block crossings etc) is often placed at pedestrianized access points.

I was in Montreal this weekend for the UCI world championships, which allowed me to take some photos of the Ruelles Vertes (green alley) network, a case study in our upcoming book. There are more than 450 across the city, providing an array of citizen-initiated interventions.

The Moynihan Station steps are one of my favorite public spaces in midtown. The new-ish (?) plantings demonstrate that steps can be so much more than a way in or out of a building. 🤩

Great to see bike network “infill,” upgrades happening across the city. Here is the new improvements to the old York Street door zone lane, between Adams and Old Fulton.

Spent the holiday on Governors Island walking and cycling with my family; that plus the abundance of Plane trees is my happy place 🤩

A sample of Toronto’s protected and contraflow bike infrastructure, including the “Toronto Barrier” with cute murals.

Toronto is very intense with its street seat barrier requirements! 👀
