"Whatever we call it, Bashford says, the eugenicists of a century ago “would undoubtedly be delighted at contemporary possibilities for reproductive selections.”"
Good to see @danfalk.bsky.social digging into the ugly return of eugenic thinking.

I get to teach about this paper next week. One of my favorites for the "👻ooh, but epigenetics👻" crowd:
Very excited to share our latest paper, with my terrific student @prakharj.bsky.social, and wonderful collaborators Dan Coombs, Caroline Wagner, and @troyday.bsky.social
We use simple models to explore how interventions could mitigate post-infection morbidity

In the study by Nathan Burton, Claire Herbert, and Rori Rohlfs, they estimate that CAHOOTS handled 18% of calls that would otherwise go to police. They also find evidence that it may have prevented some calls from happening in the first place.

Many alternatives to policing strategies have been proposed, but do they work?

Interested in joining our lab (dunnlab.org) and YIBS as a postdoc? I'm looking for someone to work on siphonophores, diversity in the open ocean, or natural history. If that's you, please reach out this week to discuss a nomination for the Donnelley Postdoc Fellowship - yibs.yale.edu/donnelley-fe...
A recent analysis in Science of more than 116,000 bird songs has revealed that the astonishing variety of passerine birdsong is built from just eight basic acoustic motifs, like trills, whistles, and harmonic notes.

The human genome is part virus. And here's a virus that's part human, having picked up a human gene about 100,000 years ago. My story here: nyti.ms/4hRKNPC
Thank you Professor
Oh, man, we all have, whether we think so or not...
Thank you
In my latest for @undark.org, I compare AI adoption in science to the Ship of Theseus:
"If you swap out every wooden plank on a ship over time, is it still the same vessel?"
I argue that science derives authority from something more than data generation + publication.
I just gave a talk on interdisciplinary yesterday that features a call for interdisciplinary people and not just diverse teams of disciplinary types. Today I read this essay with delight. Viva antedisciplinarity. journals.plos.org/ploscompbiol...
Incredibly honored to be in conversation with someone I have long admired from afar.
A good reminder "Data science" isn't Science..."Without models, mathematical or conceptual, data are just noise...science advances only if it can provide explanations...there is an area where petabytes of information can be used...But don't call it science" link.springer.com/article/10.1... 🧪🌐

This Friday I will be in Copenhagen for a discussion with @cbo.bsky.social about how to broaden the scope of science communication. I'm so looking forward to it.
