It's fungi season once again, and waxcaps are starting to pop their fruiting bodies up. Whilst we're stepping back slightly this year with our NEYEDC Waxcaps project, we're still going to be out on forays and hosting partnership events. Surveyor Claire found these beauties over the weekend! 🍄

We're working on updating our Local Wildlife Sites web pages, providing a comprehensive hub for all things local site related, including key information and FAQs for site landowners and information on how to suggest a candidate site.

Keep you eyes peeled! www.neyedc.org.uk 👀

Always a pleasure to have @teamneyedc.bsky.social along to support the Leeds University MSc training day and for promoting the role of biological recorders

The woodland trust has a really interesting guide you can download here!: www.woodlandtrust.org.uk/publications...

It depends on species, age, and also life stage! Ancient trees are those that have reached the ancient life stage &/or chronological age is 'old' (for its sp.), veteran trees are mature & have significant decay (a feature they share with ancient trees) but are not ancient by chron. age/development.

Some of the NEYEDC team had a fantastic day out recently at Brayton Barff wood, a Local Wildlife Site, where our surveyor Claire showed us the ropes in identifying and measuring ancient and veteran trees for addition to the Ancient Tree Inventory. They found some fantastic specimens (and fungi)! 🌳

Tickets are now on sale for @biologicalrecording.co.uk's Biological Recording Virtual Symposium for 2027: 'Recording the Rarities': www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/biological...

Always a great annual event that we'll be looking forward to attending!

We attended this year's Leeds University MSc field skills day last week, delivering a talk on making and sharing records alongside taxon experts from @ynuorg.bsky.social sharing their expertise in ID and specimen collection. It was great to chat to the new students and see their enthusiasm!

It really is! We've all been intrigued looking over Elizabeth's shoulder whilst she's been working in the office and she's been lovely enough to indulge our curiosities and answer lots of questions!

The second blog post from our placement student Elizabeth is now online: www.neyedc.org.uk/updates-insi...! In this piece, we learn more about the source of place-names and how they can help build an evidence base for identifying ancient woodland 🌲

This would also be a great opportunity for those within Hull to pick up and tick off some species we miss during our annual Hull City Nature Challenge! See what we recorded in April - could you find some new species in the area now we're moving into autumn? uk.inaturalist.org/projects/cit...

From 18th - 28th September, @inaturalist.bsky.social is hosting iNat Together 2026, a campaign encouraging users to connect in person over nature. This could be a friend, relative, colleague - seek the benefits of recording together! www.inaturalist.org/projects/ina... 🔎

As part of her placement, Elizabeth has written two blog posts, the first of which is live on our website: www.neyedc.org.uk/updates-insi.... This first piece introduces us to the concept of place-names, where they come from, and how they relate to woodlands! 2/2

@teamneyedc.bsky.socialSep 15, 2026, 10:11 AM

Over the last few months we've had Elizabeth, Language and Linguistic Science PhD student at the University of York, join us to investigate how place-names can strengthen the evidence base for Ancient Woodland designation, using her expertise on place-names in the medieval period. 1/2 🌳

Whilst we may be leaving summer behind, there are still several YNU field meetings and YWT Shoresearch events taking place over the coming months - check out these and information about the AGM in September's newsletter, available along with all past newsletters here 👇

We visited some fantastic sites as part of the rolling survey programme of Local Wildlife Sites this year. From navigating wet woodlands and military training sites to grasslands and windswept verges, our surveyors have worked tirelessly to represent each site fairly despite this year's drought!

The first of this year's YNU's Zoom Talks is this evening on a topic that is very relevant to Yorkshire - the Eurasian Beaver
