You're looking at a possible FIRST-EVER iNaturalist record of this delightfully fuzzy moth, scientific name Lindnerica semireducta!

A well-known common name for this animal is a Least Weasel (Mustela nivalis). We think it's the most weasel one could be.

... the more I learned about the other organisms that Fungi interact with and the more I wanted to understand other organisms in general ... I like to ID [on iNaturalist] because it’s satisfying to help folks identify their finds and learn more!” (3/3)

More from Ariel: buff.ly/8jRvOCB

@inaturalist.bsky.socialOct 5, 2026, 2:01 PM

From Ariel: β€œIt wasn’t until I was about 23 years old that I identified and foraged my first wild mushroom which quickly catapulted myself into the wonderful wild world that nature is. My interest in nature really started with mushrooms, but the more I learned about them ... (2/3)

A tips graphic on a cream grid-paper background with four mushroom photos and hand-drawn arrows. The top photos show a red-capped mushroom from the side and its underside held in a hand. The bottom photos show a cluster of orange mushrooms up close and growing on the forest floor. Text reads: "How to photograph a mushroom: advice from an expert identifier. Take clear photos of the top, underside, and side of the mushroom. Make notes of what you found the mushroom growing in, whether it's sand, soil, grass, mulch, wood, etc. If it is wood, list the tree type if you can! Take a photo of the environment you found it in. Seen by arielbonkoski on iNaturalist."

Ariel Bonkoski is based in Minnesota & teaches mushroom foraging & identification. As said by iNat community member cabrabrazy: β€œShe puts in SO MUCH WORK to ID this difficult group of fungi and deserves recognition for her efforts. We call her the Polypore Queen.” (1/3)

Ariel Bonkoski sits at the base of a large tree in a forest, smiling at the camera. She has pale green hair, glasses, and a tie-dye sweatshirt that reads "Ariel's Mushroom Co. est. 2022." A woven basket of mushrooms sits beside her, and a cluster of small mushrooms grows from the tree's base. Text reads: "Meet an identifier Β· Ariel Bonkoski. 'Some days I'm curious about what's growing in Australia; the next, I'm diving into Fungi in the Philippines. I follow my curiosity.'" Photo of Ariel by Brooks Bonkoski.A quote on a cream grid-paper background with small hand-drawn sparkles. Text reads: "'I think Fungi still have so much mystery to them. Mycologists are constantly discovering new species and new information. Just in the 10 years that I've been interested in Fungi, so much information has changed. And what's exciting about that, is so many people still have so much opportunity to make new discoveries!' Ariel Bonkoski, arielbonkoski on iNaturalist. Read Ariel's story at inaturalist.org/blog."

Every one of these observations can help future science and conservation efforts, whether they're documenting endangered species or revealing something interesting about a more common one.

Do you use #iNaturalist data in researchβ€”or advise students who do?

We put together a practical guide to using iNaturalist data in scientific research, covering how to access, acquire, analyze, and attribute the data, with examples in R and Python.
