Another visit to Flores Island and its airport, which may be the only airport in the world featuring a Blackcap! 😎 With easterly winds blowing for the past two weeks, we have only found a Greater Short-toed Lark so far, but a nice and unexpected surprise nonetheless (3rd for the Azores)
Nice David. I would love to visit this place one day. Keep us updated :-)
Unfinished piece for a current commission. The client has requested a modification that will take this illustration to a different direction, but I wanted to shred this one before moving to the new version.

very cool paper by Hengxing -- makes me feel very excited & motivated for how we can turbocharge natural history w/ eBird/iNaturalist data!
🐸 New paper from the META-MOSPHOSIS team!
Vivien investigates how external factors (temperature, continental fragmentation) and internal factors (life-cycle traits) shape species richness in salamanders. 🌍🦎

Fossil eggshells that apparently belong to large flightless birds are known from the Pliocene of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands. Could the birds have gotten there by rafting? A new study investigates: link.springer.com/article/10.1... 🪶🧪 (📷Lécuyer et al.)

& many others! We study yellow-browed warblers in Europe: where from, where to, what happens in winter & spring – could a new migration route evolve? 2 birds sampled on Helgoland so far. #birdmigration
Yes those tags also have the motus options so they should be detected too :)
The autumn arrival of yellow-browed warblers is pure magic every year. This season we’ve been on Shetland taking genomic samples from these enigmatic birds, in the hope we can link ’reverse’ migration to underlying genomic factors 🧬🗺️ excited to see what we find!
The second target species for these Bluetooth tags was the Blue Tit, to test their potential for studying irruptive migratory movements. The first results, after a few days, are just so cool. Still pretty crazy to think that we can follow the migration of such a small bird in (almost) real time! 😎

Over the moon (to put it mildly) to find this first year male SIBERIAN BLUE ROBIN in our garden at Hillwell, Shetland this morning. The fifth record for Britain and a first for Shetland. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #RareBirdsUK #Birds #UKWildlife

New preprint led by grad student Caleb Charpentier that I'm very excited about! This is a hefty review & perspective on how we can close the gap in trust between new "Deep comparative methods", and the biological meaning & inferences that systematists want.

After two calm days of westerlies, migration really kicked off as the wind turned SE in Pape, Latvia. 10,000 Chaffinches passing every half hour and also 100s of Great & Blue Tits and Great Spotted Woodpeckers… quite surreal from a W European perspective. And some nice surprises in the nets!
