Putting aside broader issues around AI, it’s clear the OpenAI is a terrible company that has rushed potentially harmful products to market without adequate testing or controls. You’d think universities would run a mile, but quite the opposite…

Winters past, a black and white raptor hovering over the Norfolk Broads was most likely a Rough-legged Buzzard; in recent years it is more likely to be a Black-winged Kite as the former species short-stops in Scandinavia owing to milder winters and the latter spreads north #UKBirding #ClimateChange

Many versions of the current El Niño intensity have been shared… we’ve had to change the colour scale to appropriately show the strength of the anomaly.

New paper in Glob. Change Biol. compiling a massive dataset on phenology of grassland birds in the Great Plains. Breeding seasons becoming shorter in the arid south but longer in the prairie potholes. Led by @ksellis.bsky.social with a big team of contributors. #ornithology doi.org/10.1111/gcb....

Palantir didn't have to evade the UK's controls on lobbyists to get astonishing, unminuted access to government ministers and officials, or even to hire them to lobby their colleagues. Why not? Because there aren't any. My column.

www.rspb.org.uk/helping-natu... evidence-based legal predator control happens in moorland areas managed by eNGOs as well. The broader question is will species like Golden Plover persist in England in a 2C world which I think is unlikely anyway...

@alexanderlees.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 11:03 AM

Agreed. I was just saying that they didn't get what they paid for and the big want from the industry is managed burning...

@alexanderlees.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 10:50 AM

I'm not disputing any of the spin but there are lots of papers that show that some species benefit from predator control on grouse moors. Obviously the species which are legally and illegally killed do not benefit and there are lots of other environmental issues associated with DGS.

@alexanderlees.bsky.socialOct 13, 2026, 8:52 AM

In fairness, the main 'industry talking point' is managed burning for which the paper finds no support. Plenty of evidence elsewhere for impacts of predator control and this paper shows that need not be intensive to have an impact. I would be suprised if the donours would have been that happy.
