"For this privilege, I will always be grateful to UCL." The privilege is all ours, Gaetano! 💜
"During the past 26 years of my association with the Institute, I have had the fortune to meet some of the most brilliant archaeologists and conservation specialists in the world, and to see generation after generation of students leaving UCL to start rewarding careers.
Of his appointment, Gaetano said: "I am honoured to receive this Honorary appointment, which allows me to continue to be part of the Institute of Archaeology's family and to give me the opportunity to contribute to the academic and research objectives of the Institute.
Outside academia, he served as Programme Director at the World Monuments Fund, managing projects including the Iraq Cultural Heritage Conservation Initiative and the conservation of monuments in Historic Cairo, Egypt. He also worked as a Project Specialist at the Getty Conservation Institute.
He has some 40 years of experience in the Middle East and Africa, starting in 1985 with archaeological investigations in Jordan, and continuing with the development of Jordan’s National Archaeological database for the Jordanian Department of Antiquities and the American Center of Oriental Research.
From 2014 to 2017, Gaetano was an Honorary Lecturer at UCL Qatar, where he was also employed as Scientific Project Manager from 2017 to 2020. From 2022 to August 2025, he held the Honorary Assistant Professorship at UCL Institute of Archaeology.
Previously a Senior Lecturer in the UCL Institute of Archaeology, Gaetano Pulumbo has an extensive history with UCL, including teaching the Managing Archaeological Sites MA.
