So interesting. And alarming.

This changes everything. That footprint looks suspiciously like a Blundstone, which can only mean that dinosaurs were Tasmanians. It wouldn’t surprise me if the “traces of feathers” turn out to be down jackets.

Great news that High Court has ruled Scope 3 emissions (exported carbon pollution) must be considered in new environmental approvals for coal mines. I’ve moved two Bills in the Parliament to that effect, both times rejected by the enviro-vandals in the ALP and LNP #auspol

There are early signs that the fire season in Victoria and Tasmania could be bad. This seasonal outlook for rain (left) and temperature (right) over the next three months is not friendly. There is lots of time to pass until fire season down here - and things will shift! - but this is a bad start.

Map showing the chance that rainfall will be low in Victoria and Tasmania. In the southern half of Victoria, there is an above average (1.5x-2x higher than normal) chance that rainfall will be low. In most of Tasmania there is much higher than normal (2x-3.5x higher than normal) change rainfall will be low.Map showing the chance that temperatures will be high in Victoria and Tasmania. Across both state, virtually all of the state has a much, much higher than normal (4x+ times higher than normal) change temperatures will be high.

Last time we had an El Nino+strong polar vortex was 2006, which was kinda wet and dry!

ALERT! Antarctic sea ice extent today tied with that in 2023 for the record low for the date, and on the present trajectory it is about to set new records.

1. what change may have occurred in past warm periods in Earth's climate - similar to what we're approaching; 2. what change is occurring; 3. what could change in the coming centuries. BUT this big message is that our knowledge is very limited. SO we need a multi-national mult-year program of work

The part of the Antarctic Ice Sheet within a region known as Wilkes Subglacial Basin is vulnerable to change. It holds enough ice to - on its own - raise sea levels by 3-4m. And yet it is hard to find a living scientist who has ever been there. Our new review paper talks about:

While all the talk has been about 2027 being odds on to be the globes hottest year on record (as post-El Nino years see a global boost in warmth), 2026 has quietly slipped into a "more likely than not (ie >50%)" chance of becoming the globes hottest year.
