Happy 45th launchiversary to NASA's Solar Mesosphere Explorer (SME)! Launched on Oct. 6, 1981, SME's mission was to study ozone processes in the mesosphere. It was the first NASA satellite to be operated entirely by a university and helped confirm the discovery of the ozone hole.
