"For many Black scholars, academia is a burning house. If we cannot extinguish that fire, Black scholars will always bear a greater risk of being burned–& therefore have to insulate themselves against the risk more than others." @cydneydupree.bsky.social

"Scholars of colour described overpreparing for presentations, ruthlessly analysing their own results before exposing them to scrutiny, softening their conclusions or avoiding research on race altogether." The level of checks I go through often astounds some colleagues

Thank you @cydneydupree.bsky.social for this article, and for your research on this, which I regret to say I missed when it came out.

As a Guatemalan-American, it also drew to mind for me Aurora Chang's work on the pressure toward hyperdocumentation

this passage from @cydneydupree.bsky.social @mwkraus.bsky.social & Brittany Torez's new study jumps off the page as such a clear distillation of one of intersectionality theory's most underappreciated insights: the ever-present baselining to whiteness.

www.nature.com/articles/s41...

One scholar recalled, "We had this norm that you need a White control condition like you need to compare… That is the norm. And it was frustrating because it’s like, ‘Do we need that to just talk about minority experiences?’” (RM_16). Scholars were asked by reviewers to explain how they can “generalize”, even though “When we have majority White samples, no one asks that question, it is just seen as a standard.” (RM_19).

"Scholars of colour often described having their objectivity and scientific rigour questioned, including suggestions that their work was below standard or ideologically motivated. White scholars, who also studied racial issues, rarely described receiving such intense scrutiny and doubt"

Mixed feelings about this one. The Arday case is painful, and I get vulnerable in this piece. But the message is important, and it draws some of my favorite research, led by Brittany Torrez with @mwkraus.bsky.social .

I wrote for @thecut.com about the Cornell case and what it says that, at my institution and many others like it, protesters are often punished more harshly than sexual assailants www.thecut.com/article/what...

thecut.comWhat It Feels Like at Cornell Right NowAs a professor at the Ivy League school, Kate Manne has known many, many victims. There’s a palpable feeling on campus, she writes, that this is big.

And then we also wrote a summary report of the broader literature showing unequal scrutiny in science and other domains here: drive.google.com/file/d/1GSMy...

For @societyworkshop.bsky.social, we made a video explainer about the unequal scrutiny and interrogation that Black and other marginalized folks are subject to when they study race/racism.

The research this video is based on is here: link.springer.com/article/10.1...

Here is the Society Workshop report reviewing the science showing how and why scrutiny is not race neutral.

Over the summer, the intense public scrutiny of Professor Jason Arday was a painful reminder of the way that scrutiny is unequally applied in many domains, including science, to scrutinize and interrogate the competence and deservingness of, in particular, our Black colleagues and peers.

"The attack on DEI in academia isn’t just ... about grants, positions and policies. It’s also psychological. It’s about who enters the room expecting to be believed, and who enters the same room expecting to be attacked."

College athletes need unions to prevent this kind of horrendous abuse. This solidarity and push to remove this dangerous man from coaching them is very brave.

Exceptional solidarity from ASU hockey players who have demanded their coach be placed on leave for essentially overseeing the murder of their teammate and have disputed the university’s findings. www.nytimes.com/athletic/764...

Seven Arizona State men’s hockey players asked the university’s president to place the Sun Devils’ coaching staff on administrative leave pending further investigation into the workout that left sophomore transfer Matthew Mayich on life support.

In a 26-page letter sent to ASU president Michael Crow on Monday and obtained by The Athletic, the players disputed numerous findings from the university’s initial review of the Aug. 20 workout, writing that Mayich did not receive water and was provided inadequate medical care after his collapse.

All the news about the Cornell 7 has inspired some folks, like the fantastic @jessicavalenti.bsky.social, to re-up their calls for banning historically White fraternities. 10 years ago I reviewed the history of these orgs, arguing they were un-reformable. I stand by my argument. In my new book...

In case u need a movie suggestion!

Whenever you see a pollster or consultant give a take like this, it’s always worth following the money. In this case, Emanuel has paid Anzalone’s firm nearly $300k (maybe more but that’s what I found so far).

Underestimate @RahmEmanuel at your own risk.
He knows how to win. He knows how to fight.
And he knows how to message.
And no one will out work him. Regardless of whether he wins the Democratic nomination in 2028 he will make an impact on the race. You can be sure of that. Don't take your eyes off of him. At the minimum, learn from him.

If you use AI to do your research, you really cannot complain when reviewers use AI to review your papers, imo. The processes you use to expedite your workflow create more work for the rest of us, who are under the same constraints to maximize our own output. Plus, peer review is invisible labor.
