It doesn’t much matter if only a small number of men hurt women if the vast majority of “good” ones are unwilling to do anything about it.
AED has been tracking this every step of the way—and won’t stop now. I'll have more on the sham review, GOP stalling tactics, and the anti-abortion response soon.
In the meantime, Abortion, Every Day will continue to keep a close eye. You can support our work and read more at AbortionEveryDay.com
Once the midterms are over, though, they’re telling antis that the gloves will come off.
This was never about women’s health or safety: Republicans are angry that they can’t control women. The study itself was always about politics. And right now, the White House knows the politics are BAD.
The move was a response to anti-abortion pressure: extremist activists and lawmakers are furious that abortion pills allow women to side step their bans. (Since the end of Roe, the abortion rate hasn’t gone down by one single percent)
Almost exactly one year ago I broke the news that the FDA was conducting a bogus study of abortion pills (even though we have decades of research proving they’re safe)
The FDA just announced they won’t release their “safety review” of abortion pills until March of next year. In other words: They’re stalling until after the midterms.
I also believe - and this is what I said at Vox - that Dems come across as too weak or defensive on the issue. Esp when talking about abortion throughout pregnancy. Voters will respect them more if they stand ten toes down
If we’re talking about Trump in 2024, there’s a few things: - Trump didn’t run against abortion - just the opposite in fact. He tried to seem as moderate as possible - Prochoice ballot measure let voters split their tickets - voting for abortion but also Trump
This is an important point, but it’s not always true! There’s a reason GOP candidates are running from the issue. We’ve watched abortion win reelection for Kentucky’s Dem governor, flip an Alabama House seat, destroy the Virginia GOP in 2023–and beyond
Too many polls adopt a conservative framework that ask voters *when* the government should ban abortion, instead of *if* they should. When asked the latter, as voters were here, Americans’ answer is clear
The issue only gets more powerful for Dems over time—bc the longer we go without Roe, the more people are impacted by bans. It won’t be long before every single American has been harmed in some way—whether it’s a guy whose wife went septic or a woman forced to drive hours to find a maternity ward
Abortion bans are arguably the most unpopular laws in America — even in red states — but we keep acting like the country is somehow split jessica.substack.com/p/abortion-b...
This is not some one off poll btw - years of data shows the same. But for whatever reason, establishment pundits and politicos are intent on buying into conservative’s propaganda
Today, more proof why it's so important jessica.substack.com/p/2026-elect...
Earlier this week, I spoke to Astead Herndon at @vox.com about why Dems need to go much, much harder on abortion youtu.be/17y58f_P82M?...
The narrative that Americans are divided on abortion is a lie to hide just how undemocratic bans are—and convince lawmakers to take weaker stances on abortion. ~70% of Deep South voters oppose abortion bans. I wrote about the implications of this:
