Another quickie for #PoemsAbout and the #Rot prompt. Apologies for lack of engagement but am deep deep in a writing retreat and staying mostly offline - normal service will resume next week!
Thanks as ever to @thebrokenspine.co.uk and @alanparrywriter.co.uk 🙏

White letters of a prose poem on a black background:

The Plum

The plum was much too big and kept getting bigger, too vast to fit in our small fierce mouths, we would never get it past our teeth. We scratched drum-tight purple skin with our hungry nails but no flesh seeped through, our scratching left twisted runes to be deciphered by someone not us. We Sisyphus-ed the plum to the top of the mountain and watched it roll back down flattening everything in its way, rotting as it went. Large purple plum sitting on a white and blue tiled surface.

In the wine world and elsewhere, noble rot is a desired condition. I have an anniversary and a birthday coming up, so this was a fitting prompt once I was able to muck it out.

I think this is true of most horror movies: that the best ones are rooted in reality, mirroring or subverting the every day.

Here are three relatively recent scary movies (and a bonus show!) that I’ve enjoyed lately.

Spoiler Friendly. 💀

Happy October everyone! 🍁🍂
Today’s #FragmentsFriday is a mini ode to our own Luna Books, who is an absolute menace, but we love her.

Next up: #Rot. Flowers rot. Houses rot. Governments rot. Love can rot beautifully if you leave it somewhere warm enough. New theme begins Friday. Don’t post early. Use Alt Text. Tag #PoemsAbout. Read. Repost. Reply.

A dark, close-up photograph of wilted and decaying flowers, their curled brown petals lit by warm orange light against a near-black background. The Broken Spine logo appears at the top left and @thebrokenspine.co.uk at the top right. White text at the bottom reads: “Read Repost Reply #POEMSABOUT #ROT”.

Yes sorry, they do look cartoonish I think, strange and startled, in the photos I’ve seen, like they’re not meant to be there or not meant to be caught, like crocodile-dolphin hybrids, a fish stew you significantly mention. 🎣👏

@megsdregs.bsky.socialSep 18, 2026, 11:24 PM

I always think they look like a cartoon, how can this exist here?

What is everyone doing with their used writing notebooks? Do you donate them? Digitize them? Keep them in a musty attic trunk?
What is everyone doing with their ink-soaked pages? Inquiring minds want to know. 📚📚📚

The bird wars continue at home base, resulting in a fallen pigeon carcass on my windshield, which prompted a re-watching of The Birds, and so inspired this poem!
